The Red Sea Reef Colours Pro Multi Test Kit measures iodine, potassium and iron — the trace elements behind Red Sea's Trace-Colors coral colouration program. Trace elements have a narrower safe range than calcium or magnesium, so Red Sea's own guidance is to test before every dose rather than follow a fixed schedule. This kit is what makes that possible without buying three separate test kits.

At $159.50 for the kit, a full three-parameter test cycle (iodine, potassium and iron together) costs approximately $3.99 per test, based on the 40-test potassium reagent — the parameter that runs out first. The iodine and iron reagents will outlast it; refill reagents let you keep testing those two after potassium reagent is used up.

  • Suitable for: reef aquariums running or considering the Trace-Colors A/B/C/D coral colouration program, and anyone wanting to confirm trace element levels before dosing.
  • Not suitable for: freshwater aquariums, or as a general water quality kit — it doesn't test calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, ammonia, nitrite or nitrate. Pair it with the Reef Foundation Pro kit for those.
Care and maintenance

Store reagents away from direct sunlight at room temperature, and keep bottle caps tightly closed between uses to prevent contamination. Check the use-by date printed on each reagent bottle before testing, and replace individual reagents as they run out rather than the whole kit.

Common questions

Why does the kit list a different number of tests for each parameter?

Each parameter uses its own reagent, consumed at a different rate per test. Potassium's titration method uses more reagent per test than the colorimetric methods for iodine and iron, so its 40-test count is the practical limit on how many full three-parameter cycles the kit supports.

Do I need this kit if I only dose one Trace-Colors element?

You only need to test the elements you're dosing. If you're running the full four-part Trace-Colors program (A, B, C and D), this kit covers the three that have direct tests — iodine, potassium and iron.

Can I buy replacement reagents instead of a new kit?

Yes — individual reagent refills are available so you don't need to replace the comparator or titration equipment once a single reagent runs out.

How is this different from the Reef Foundation Pro kit?

Reef Colours Pro tests the trace colour elements — iodine, potassium and iron. Reef Foundation Pro tests the major skeletal elements — calcium, alkalinity and magnesium. Most reef keepers running a full dosing program use both.

Is titration harder to use than a colour comparator?

It takes a little more care — you're counting drops to a colour-change endpoint rather than matching a colour card — but it's the standard method for measuring potassium accurately at reef-relevant concentrations.
