Colour & specimen: This fish's colouration may look different in your own tank depending on your lighting, diet, stress levels and water conditions, and can vary between individual fish of the same species. You will not receive this exact fish pictured; the one you receive will be a similar size, colour and condition.
WA & TAS orders: state biosecurity regulations restrict which live animals can be sent to Western Australia and Tasmania — please check what we can send to you before ordering. See delivery info
Reefalicious Live Phytoplankton
A daily dose of live phytoplankton, straight from the fridge. Reefalicious Live Phytoplankton is a bottled culture of live marine microalgae for reef and marine aquariums, sold in 250 mL and 500 mL bottles. It's dosed daily to feed filter feeders directly and to fuel copepod and rotifer cultures further up the food chain.
Key features
- Dosed daily, not occasionally — Reefalicious recommends 10 mL per 100 L of tank water each day, so a bottle is a running supply rather than a single treatment.
- Feeds filter feeders directly — corals, clams, feather dusters and other filter feeders take phytoplankton straight from the water column.
- Fuels your other live foods — the same bottle can be used to feed a copepod or rotifer culture instead of, or as well as, dosing the display tank.
- Marketed to help compete against nuisance dinoflagellates by taking up nutrients they would otherwise use — this is Reefalicious's claim rather than an independently verified one, so treat it as one tool among several rather than a fix on its own.

Which Reefalicious live food do I need?
| Product | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Live Phytoplankton | Live marine microalgae | Feeding filter feeders directly, and fuelling your own copepod or rotifer cultures |
| Live Copepods | Live marine copepods | Mandarins, dragonets, wrasses and other pod-eaters; reef biodiversity |
| Live Rotifers | Live marine rotifers | First food for fish larvae and fry; supplementary filter-feeder food |
| Live Zooplankton | Mixed live marine microfauna | General biodiversity top-ups for a new or established reef system |
All four are sold in 250 mL and 500 mL bottles and are stored and shipped the same way — refrigerated, and used promptly after arrival.
Directions
Swirl the bottle before every use — phytoplankton settles out of suspension in the fridge, and an even dose depends on mixing it back in. Dose 10 mL per 100 L of tank water daily, either straight into the display or sump, or into a copepod or rotifer culture vessel. Increase gradually if you're feeding heavily-stocked filter feeders such as a large clam or a soft coral colony, and watch water clarity — a heavy hand can cloud the water in a smaller system.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for: reef tanks with filter-feeding corals, clams or feather dusters; refugiums and culture vessels growing copepods or rotifers.
Not suitable for: freshwater systems. Overdosing in a small or lightly-stocked tank can cloud the water and add an unwanted nutrient load — start conservatively and adjust.
Storage and handling
Store refrigerated and swirl daily. Reefalicious doesn't publish a shelf life for this product; discard if the culture separates permanently, changes colour noticeably, or develops an off smell.
Goes well with
- Reefalicious Live Copepods and Reefalicious Live Rotifers — phytoplankton is what keeps both cultures fed and reproducing.
- Reefalicious F2 Starter — for growing a larger volume of phytoplankton yourself once you've got a starter culture going.
Warranty and delivery
As a live product, arrival condition is covered separately from standard warranty terms — get in touch straight away if a bottle arrives in poor condition. Otherwise the usual consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law apply.
Common questions
Do I still need this if I dose a bottled coral food?
Often yes — phytoplankton and coral amino or particulate foods target different feeders. Clams and many soft corals rely specifically on phytoplankton-sized particles that other foods don't replace.
Will this cloud my water?
At the labelled rate it generally shouldn't, but overdosing — especially in a smaller tank — can cause temporary cloudiness. Start at the low end and increase gradually.
What's the difference between the 250 mL and 500 mL bottle?
Only the volume — both are the same phytoplankton culture. Daily dosing at 10 mL per 100 L means a 500 mL bottle lasts roughly twice as many doses as a 250 mL bottle at the same tank size.
Can I use this to seed my own culture instead of dosing the tank?
Yes — this bottle can be used as a starter culture. Combine it with Reefalicious F2 Starter nutrient medium and light to grow your own ongoing supply.
