Seachem Matrix 100L Drum
Key features
- Large surface area: Seachem rates it at more than about 700 square metres per litre, and states one litre gives as much surface as 170 litres of plastic bio balls.
- Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate removal in the same filter: the pores support both nitrifying bacteria (which convert ammonia and nitrite) and denitrifying bacteria (which remove nitrate in low oxygen areas deep in the pores).
- Inert: it will not break down, will not directly change your pH, and does not need replacing.
- Rinseable: most of the bacteria live inside the pieces, so rinsing off debris does not strip the colony.
- No media bag should be needed for most uses, as the pieces are large enough on their own.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater and marine systems with any wet or wet/dry filter; Seachem recommends a canister filter for best effect. Smaller tanks are better served by the smaller Seachem Matrix sizes, as this drum treats far more water than a single home aquarium needs.
Care
Set up the flow through your filter in this order: mechanical media (sponge or floss) first, then chemical media, then Matrix. Use it with Seachem Stability to establish the biofilter faster. Seachem says nitrate improvement generally shows within a couple of weeks, though every system varies; if nitrate holds steady and you want it lower, add more Matrix. Pieces vary naturally in colour and size, from very light to quite dark, and this is normal.
