Sets and holds freshwater pH at a neutral 7.0 — the target most community tanks actually want. Seachem Neutral Regulator is a dry, phosphate-buffered regulator for freshwater aquariums that adjusts and holds pH at 7.0, removes chlorine and chloramine, and detoxifies ammonia in the same dose. It softens water on the way by precipitating calcium and magnesium out of solution. This is a freshwater-only product — it is not formulated or marketed for marine or reef systems.

Key features
  • Sets and holds pH 7.0 — a genuine target for community tanks that don't want strongly acidic or alkaline water.
  • Conditions the same dose — removes chlorine and chloramine and detoxifies ammonia alongside the pH adjustment.
  • Softens as it buffers — precipitates calcium and magnesium, which is also what can cause brief cloudiness after dosing.
  • Treats water from under 1c per litre on the largest pack — see Specifications below for every size.
  • Five pack sizes — 50 g through 4 kg, sized for a single tank or a fish room.
The catch you should know about

Neutral Regulator is a phosphate-based buffer — it is not phosphate-free. It will register on a phosphate test kit, and under strong lighting that phosphate can feed algae. Seachem's own guidance is to avoid it in planted aquariums, where a carbonate-based buffer is the better choice. It's also less effective in very hard, high-KH water, which resists the pH change — Seachem's Acid Buffer is the companion product for that situation.

*Calculated at Seachem's maintenance dose of 5 g per 40–80 L, using the conservative (40 L) end of that range, so the figures are the "worst case" cost — actual coverage is often better once a tank is on a settled maintenance schedule.

Dosage and directions

Use 5 g (one level teaspoon) per 40–80 L of water. In cases of high starting alkalinity, Seachem's guidance is that the product may be dosed daily until pH settles at 7.0; after that, dose once or twice a month, or as needed, to hold the target. Add directly to the aquarium or dissolve into replacement water during a water change.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for: freshwater community aquariums that want a stable, neutral pH around 7.0, including as part of dechlorinating and conditioning tap water at a water change.

Not suitable for: marine or reef tanks, which run a much higher target pH and are not compatible with this product's chemistry. Not the first choice for planted tanks, due to the phosphate content — use a carbonate-based buffer instead. Not very effective on its own in very hard, high-KH source water without additional support.

Safety

Keep out of reach of children. Cloudiness for a short period after dosing is normal, from the calcium and magnesium precipitating out — it clears as the precipitate settles or is filtered out. Persistent cloudiness beyond a day or so is worth investigating rather than dosing again.

Goes well with
  • Seachem Acid Buffer — pairs with Neutral Regulator in very hard water where pH resists holding at 7.0 on its own.
  • A reliable pH test kit — dose to your own readings rather than a fixed calendar, since tap water hardness varies by area.
Warranty and delivery

Supplied as a dry powder in a sealed container. Faults, short fills and misdescription are covered by the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law, in addition to anything Seachem itself offers.

Common questions

Is Seachem Neutral Regulator phosphate-free?

No. It's a phosphate-buffered product, and it will register on a phosphate test. If you're running a planted tank and want to avoid adding phosphate, Seachem recommends a carbonate-based buffer instead.

Can I use this in a saltwater or reef tank?

No — Neutral Regulator is formulated and marketed for freshwater only. Seachem makes separate marine-specific buffers, such as Marine Buffer, for saltwater pH.

Why did my water go cloudy after dosing?

That's the water softening in action — calcium and magnesium precipitating out of solution. It's expected and normally clears within a day as the precipitate settles or is filtered out.

Will it work in my hard tap water?

It can struggle in very hard, high-KH water, which resists the pH change. Seachem's Acid Buffer is designed to be used alongside Neutral Regulator in that situation.

How often do I need to dose it once my tank is stable?

Once or twice a month at the standard 5 g per 40–80 L rate, or as needed based on your own pH testing — daily dosing is only for bringing a high-alkalinity tank down to 7.0 for the first time.
