Seachem Safe
One gram detoxifies a full 1000 litres of tap water. Seachem Safe is the dry, ultra-concentrated powder form of Seachem Prime, removing chlorine and chloramine and detoxifying ammonia, nitrite and nitrate in a single dose. As a powder it stores in a fraction of the space of a liquid conditioner and is measured with the scoop included in each tub.
It suits both freshwater and saltwater systems, including reef tanks, and can be dosed at every water change, at tank start-up, or as an emergency treatment for ammonia and nitrite spikes.
Key features
- Ultra-concentrated dry formula — a small scoop treats a large volume of water, so one tub lasts a long time in a typical home aquarium.
- Detoxifies five parameters in one dose — chlorine, chloramine, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate.
- Non-acidic — will not shift aquarium pH.
- Reef and skimmer friendly — will not over-activate protein skimmers.
- One product for fresh and saltwater — no need for separate conditioners.
- Cycling support — can be dosed during start-up to reduce ammonia and nitrite toxicity while the biofilter establishes.
- Very low running cost — works out to well under 1c per litre of water treated across every pack size.
Specifications

Pack size and cost per litre
Based on Seachem's standard dose of 1.25 g per 1,250 L, one gram treats roughly 1000 L. The 50 g tub suits a single tank doing regular water changes for years; the larger sizes suit multi-tank setups or high-volume use.
| Pack size | Approx. litres treated | Cost per litre |
|---|---|---|
| 50 g | ~50,000 L | under 1c per litre |
| 250 g | ~250,000 L | under 1c per litre |
| 1 kg | ~1,000,000 L | under 1c per litre |
| 4 kg | ~4,000,000 L | under 1c per litre |
Suitable For
- Freshwater and saltwater aquariums, including reef and invertebrate systems
- Shrimp, snails, plants and corals — Seachem states no fish, invertebrate or plant is known to have a specific aversion to Prime or Safe when dosed as directed
- New tank cycling and emergency ammonia or nitrite spikes
Not Suitable For
- Adjusting or buffering pH — it has no pH effect
- Replacing sensible water-change volumes — Seachem still recommends single changes of around 30% or less for community tanks, and around 20% for delicate livestock
- Treating fish disease or parasites — it is a conditioner, not a medication
Dosage and Directions
Routine dechlorination of tap water: 1.25 g per 1000-1250 L, added to new water before use or dosed directly into the aquarium during or after a water change.
- Elevated ammonia, such as during cycling: 1.25 g per 300 L.
- A double dose may be used safely for exceptionally high chloramine.
- Up to four times the normal dose may be used in emergencies to detoxify nitrite and nitrate.
- Halve the dose if water temperature exceeds 30°C and chlorine or ammonia levels are otherwise low.
Safety
For aquarium use only. Keep the container tightly sealed in a cool, dry place out of reach of children and pets. Avoid inhaling the powder or contact with eyes; rinse with water if contact occurs. Always measure doses with a clean, dry scoop.

Common Questions
What is the difference between Seachem Safe and Seachem Prime?
Both use the same detoxification chemistry. Safe is the dry, ultra-concentrated powder version dosed by scoop or teaspoon; Prime is the liquid version dosed by drops or millilitres.
How much Safe do I need for my tank?
As a guide, 1.25 g treats roughly 1000-1250 L for a standard water change, so even the 50 g tub covers a typical 100-200 L home aquarium for a long time.
Is Safe reef safe and safe for shrimp and plants?
Yes. Seachem states no fish, invertebrate or plant is known to have a specific aversion to Prime or Safe, and it will not over-activate protein skimmers, when dosed as directed.
Can I use Safe while my tank is cycling?
Yes. It temporarily detoxifies ammonia and nitrite so fish are protected while the biological filter establishes itself.
Will Safe change my aquarium's pH?
No. It is non-acidic and formulated not to alter pH.
