Spider Wood XLarge
One hand-picked spider wood centrepiece for large-format aquascapes. Bioscape Spider Wood XLarge is a single piece of natural branching driftwood in the 50–60 cm length range, sold individually — the same spindly, root-like wood used to build tree-style and Japanese-inspired aquascapes, chosen here for tanks that need one dominant piece rather than several smaller branches.
Key features
- Genuine spider wood — thin, branching driftwood with the twisted, root-like form the style is known for, well suited to tree-style and nature aquascapes.
- XLarge, 50–60 cm — sold at Bioscape's XLarge length grade, measured across the longest point of the piece.
- Sold as a single piece — pick this listing when you want one dominant XLarge branch rather than a bundle of smaller pieces.
- Each piece is unique — natural wood, so exact shape, branching and colour vary piece to piece; the photo is representative, not the specific piece you'll receive.
- Releases tannins — will tint the water amber to tea-brown as it settles in, the natural blackwater look many aquascapers want.

Bioscape doesn't publish a weight for the individual piece — it's a natural product hand-picked within the XLarge length grade, and weight varies with branching and thickness. We're not printing a figure we can't confirm.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater aquascapes, blackwater and biotope-style tanks, and terrarium or paludarium builds where a branching wood centrepiece is wanted. Not recommended for reef or marine display tanks, where driftwood and its tannins aren't part of the usual setup, and best avoided in tanks stocked with species that need very stable, tannin-free water.
Preparation and sinking
Spider wood floats when new and can take weeks to waterlog and sink on its own, especially on a piece this size. Weighing it down, soaking it in a bucket, or boiling it in stages will waterlog it faster and also draws out some of the tannins before it goes in the display tank. Rinse it well before adding it, regardless of which method you use.
Expect tannin release to continue for some time after the piece sinks. If you don't want the tea-coloured water, run activated carbon and do slightly more frequent water changes until the leaching settles; if you do want it, this is exactly the look blackwater and biotope tanks are going for.
Goes well with
- Activated carbon media — for keeping water clear if you don't want the tannin tint.
- Aquascaping weights or mesh — to hold the piece down while it waterlogs.
- A smaller Spider Wood piece — to build a layered branch structure around the XLarge centrepiece.
Warranty and delivery
Covered against being not as described under Australian Consumer Law. As a natural product, the piece you receive will vary from the listing photo in exact shape, branching and colour — that's expected, not a fault.
Common questions
Will it float when it arrives?
Almost certainly, at first. Spider wood is light and dry when new, and a piece this size can take several weeks to waterlog and sink on its own. Weighing it down or soaking it speeds this up.
Will it turn my water brown?
Yes, especially in the first weeks. That's tannin release, and it's normal — not a sign anything is wrong. Activated carbon and water changes will keep it under control if you'd rather not have the tint.
Is it reef or marine safe?
It isn't intended for reef or marine display tanks. Driftwood and the tannins it releases aren't part of a typical marine setup.
Will I get the exact piece shown in the photo?
No — this is a single natural piece within the XLarge size grade, and the photo is representative of the wood type and size range, not a guarantee of the specific piece you'll receive.
Can I use it in a terrarium or paludarium as well as an aquarium?
Yes — spider wood is commonly used above and below the waterline in paludariums and terrariums as well as fully aquatic setups.
