Zoo Med Hermit Crab Sea Sponge
Gives hermit crabs a safe way out of the water dish. The Zoo Med Hermit Crab Sea Sponge is a natural, undyed sea sponge sized to sit in a hermit crab's water dish. Land hermit crabs breathe through modified gills and need constant access to water, but a smooth-sided dish is a drowning risk for small crabs with nothing to climb. Zoo Med states the sponge also carries natural oceanic minerals that support hermit crab health.
Key features
- Natural sea sponge — no dyes, no synthetic fibres.
- Exit point from the water dish — cuts the drowning risk for small and juvenile crabs.
- Carries natural oceanic minerals — Zoo Med states these support long-term hermit crab health.
- Reusable — rinse and reuse rather than replacing after every clean.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for any land hermit crab water dish where the water is deep enough that a small crab could struggle to climb out unassisted. Not a substitute for good dish design — use the sponge alongside a sensibly shallow dish, not instead of one. Not intended as the sole source of drinking water; dechlorinated fresh water and, separately, marine-salt water should still be provided in the enclosure.
Care and maintenance
Rinse the sponge in dechlorinated water every two to three days and let it dry out between cleans to keep bacteria down. A sponge left permanently wet in a warm crabitat will foul faster than one that gets a dry spell. Replace it once it stays slimy or discoloured after rinsing.

Common questions
Do I still need a shallow water dish if I use this sponge?
Yes. The sponge reduces drowning risk in a dish that's already a reasonable depth for the crab's size — it isn't a fix for a dish that's too deep for the smallest crab in the enclosure.
How often should I rinse it?
Every two to three days, in dechlorinated water, with a full dry-out in between where possible.
Can I use it in both the fresh and salt water dishes?
Keep a separate sponge for each dish rather than moving one sponge between them, so salt residue doesn't end up in the fresh water supply.
