Zoo Med Hermit Sand Green
Calcium-carbonate sand crabs can dig, forage and moult in. Zoo Med Hermit Sand in Green is a calcium carbonate substrate sized for land hermit crab enclosures, bright enough to lift the look of the crabitat while still giving crabs a natural surface to dig and bury themselves in when moulting. Zoo Med states the sand also provides a source of calcium, which hermit crabs need for healthy shell and exoskeleton development.
Key features
- Calcium carbonate substrate – Zoo Med states it's a source of dietary calcium for hermit crabs.
- Digs and holds shape when damp – lets crabs build a stable burrow to moult in.
- Bright green colour – a colour-substrate option rather than a natural-tone sand.
Which colour do I need?
This is a colour choice, not a performance choice – Green, Yellow and the rest of the Zoo Med Hermit Sand range are the same calcium carbonate sand in different dyes. Pick to match your enclosure's look, or to make it easy to spot when the substrate needs a top-up.
| Colour | Bag size |
|---|---|
| Green (this listing) | 2 lb (approx. 0.9 kg) |
| Yellow | 2 lb (approx. 0.9 kg) |
Zoo Med also makes this sand in Blue, Mauve and White, with White additionally available in a 5 lb bag – check with us for current stock on colours outside this range.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable as a digging and moulting substrate for land hermit crabs. Not suitable as the sole humidity source – hermit crabs need the substrate kept lightly damp (sandcastle consistency, not wet) and deep enough for your largest crab to bury completely, which this sand supports but does not do on its own.
Care and maintenance
Keep it lightly moist rather than wet or bone dry, and maintain enough depth for the largest crab in the enclosure to bury itself fully – moulting crabs that can't get deep enough are at higher risk during the moult. Spot-clean waste and remove any mould promptly; substrate that never gets a dry spell is more prone to mould in a warm, humid crabitat.

Common questions
How deep should the sand be?
Deep enough for the largest hermit crab in the enclosure to bury completely – a crab that can't get fully under the substrate is more exposed during a moult.
Does the colour wash out?
Zoo Med doesn't publish fade or wash-out data for this product; rinse before first use and expect the usual gradual dulling any coloured terrarium substrate shows over time.
Can I mix colours?
Yes – Green and Yellow (and the wider Zoo Med Hermit Sand range) are the same substrate in different dyes, so mixing is a look choice with no functional downside.
