AMS Bio Culture Brick- 2 Pack (4in x 4in x 1in)
A rigid block of bacteria housing that won't blow around your sump. The AMS Bio Culture Brick is an inert nano-ceramic biological filter block, sold as a twin pack with each brick measuring 10 x 10 x 2.5 cm. Where loose balls can shift and channel water around themselves, a brick sits flat and stays put, giving nitrifying bacteria a stable surface to colonise. Rated for both freshwater and marine aquariums.
Key features
- Inert nano-ceramic construction — won't leach into the water or shift pH.
- Rigid brick format — stays put in a sump baffle or filter tray instead of tumbling like loose media.
- Twin pack, 10 x 10 x 2.5 cm each — stack them or spread them across separate chambers.
- Fresh and saltwater rated — one product for both system types.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for sump baffles, filter trays and canister filter baskets where you want media to stay in a fixed position. Works in freshwater, planted, marine and reef systems.
Not suitable as the sole filtration in a heavily stocked system — pair it with mechanical filtration to catch solid waste before it reaches the brick.
What's included
- 2 x AMS Bio Culture Bricks (10 x 10 x 2.5 cm each)
Care and maintenance
Rinse in tank water only, never tap water, if flow across the brick slows or it visibly clogs with detritus. Tap water chlorine and chloramine will kill off the bacterial colony you've built up. The ceramic itself doesn't wear out under normal use.
Goes well with
- Bioscape Carbon Extraction Pad — chemical polishing to run alongside biological media.
- Seachem Prime — conditions new tap water and detoxifies ammonia while the colony establishes.
- API Freshwater Master Multi Test Kit 5 in 1 — tracks ammonia and nitrite while the brick cycles in.
Warranty and delivery
This is a passive filter media rather than a mechanical part, so there's no separate manufacturer warranty term published — your purchase is still covered by the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law. Ships standard parcel freight.
Common questions
What's the advantage of a brick over loose bio balls?
A brick holds its position in a sump baffle or filter tray, so flow passes through it consistently instead of channelling around loose media that's shifted or settled.
Can I cut or reshape the bricks?
The manufacturer doesn't publish guidance on cutting the bricks, so we can't confirm it won't compromise the material — use them whole as supplied.
Do I need to cycle the bricks before adding fish?
Yes. Like any biological media, it needs to be colonised by nitrifying bacteria first. Seed it with mature media or water from an established tank and monitor ammonia and nitrite until both read zero.
Will these affect my water chemistry?
No. The ceramic is inert and won't alter pH, hardness or salinity.
