API Pond Care Ecofix 3.78ltr
Digests the sludge an algaecide leaves behind. API Pond EcoFix is a concentrated blend of natural bacteria that breaks down fish waste, dead algae, leaves and grass clippings on the pond floor — reducing sludge, easing odour and improving clarity as the bacteria consume the waste rather than through a clarifying chemical reaction. This 3.78 L (1 US gal) bottle is a season's supply for most ponds, at under 1c per litre of pond water treated at the standard dose.
Key features
- Natural bacterial digester — consumes fish waste, dead algae, leaves and grass clippings rather than masking them, so sludge doesn't just resettle.
- Cuts the nutrient bank that feeds the next algae bloom — the nutrients released as waste rots are exactly what algae feeds on.
- Under 1c per litre of pond water at the standard dosing rate — 3.78 L treats roughly 59,600 L across a season.
- Safe for fish, plants and surrounding wildlife when used as directed.
- Pairs directly with an algaecide course — dose after algae is knocked back, to clear the dead material it leaves behind.
Ingredients
API's consumer label describes EcoFix only as an all-natural, highly concentrated bacteria blend and does not name the specific bacterial strains used. Flagged as unverified — contact API directly if strain-level detail matters for your setup.

Dosage and directions
- At spring start-up and again at season end, dose 60 mL (4 tbsp) per 946 L (250 US gal), twice weekly for 2 weeks.
- For ongoing maintenance through the season, drop to 30 mL (2 tbsp) per 946 L (250 US gal) every 2 weeks.
- Shake well before each use.
- Where algae has been treated with an algaecide, dose EcoFix afterwards so the bacteria have dead algae and waste to work on.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for:
- Ornamental ponds carrying a sludge or organic-waste load on the floor
- Ponds with fish and plants, dosed as directed
Not suitable for:
- Replacing mechanical filtration or regular debris removal in heavily stocked ponds
- Clearing water that's cloudy from suspended particles rather than settled organic waste — see API Pond Simply Clear for that
Care and maintenance
Bacterial activity is temperature-dependent — expect faster digestion as water warms into spring and summer, and slower results over winter. Keep dosing on schedule through the season rather than only when sludge becomes visible.
Safety and handling
- Keep out of reach of children.
- Wash hands after handling.
- Shake well before use; store as directed on the label.
Goes well with
- API Pond AlgaeFix — dose the algaecide first, then EcoFix to digest the dead algae it leaves behind.
- API Pond Simply Clear — for cloudiness from suspended particles rather than settled sludge.
Warranty and delivery
This is a consumable pond treatment, so no manufacturer warranty period applies. That doesn't affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law — if the product is faulty, unsafe or not as described, you're entitled to a remedy. Ships as standard freight.
Common questions
How is EcoFix different from AlgaeFix?
EcoFix digests organic waste and sludge with bacteria. AlgaeFix kills living algae with an EPA-registered algaecide. They solve different problems and are often used together — algaecide first, then EcoFix.
Will EcoFix clear cloudy water on its own?
Only if the cloudiness is caused by organic waste breaking down. If it's fine suspended particles or silt, pair it with Simply Clear, which is built for that.
Does cold weather affect it?
Yes — bacterial digestion slows as water cools, so expect faster results through the warmer months and slower results over winter.
Is it safe to dose with fish and plants in the pond?
Yes, when used as directed.
Does one bottle really last a season?
Yes — on the maintenance dosing schedule, 3.78 L covers roughly 59,600 L. Heavily stocked or sludge-heavy ponds may need more frequent dosing.
