AquaVitro Synthesis
A concentrated nitrogen top-up for planted tanks running short. AquaVitro Synthesis is a concentrated liquid nitrogen source for freshwater planted aquariums, delivering 30,000 mg/L of nitrogen across three forms — organic, nitrate and ammoniacal. Dosed at 5 mL per 680 L, up to twice weekly or as needed, it tops up nitrogen for plants that are drawing it down faster than the tank supplies it naturally. Sold here in 150 mL and 350 mL.
Key features
- Concentrated nitrogen source — 30,000 mg/L total nitrogen, supplied as roughly 50% organic (urea), 25% nitrate and 25% ammoniacal nitrogen.
- Small, precise doses — 5 mL treats 680 L; the included pipette holds 1 mL when filled to the base of the bulb, for scaling doses down in smaller tanks.
- Pairs with activate — dosed alongside AquaVitro activate at the same rate, the two combine for a 5:1 nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio.
- Under a cent per litre — both pack sizes work out to under 1c per litre of aquarium water treated; see "Which size do I need?" below for the numbers side by side.
- Freshwater, planted-tank specific — formulated for the nitrogen demands of a growing planted aquarium, not as a general-purpose water conditioner.

Which size do I need?
| Size | Litres treated per pack | Cost per litre treated |
|---|---|---|
| 150 mL | 20,400 L | Under 1c per litre |
| 350 mL | 47,600 L | Under 1c per litre |
Both sizes land under a cent per litre of aquarium water treated, and on a strict per-litre basis the 150 mL works out fractionally cheaper than the 350 mL. Pack size comes down to how often you want to reorder rather than a bulk-buy saving. aquavitro also makes 1 L and 4 L sizes; this store currently stocks 150 mL and 350 mL only.
Dosage and directions
Dose 5 mL per 680 L (180 US gallons) of aquarium water, up to twice a week or as needed, based on how quickly your plants are using nitrogen. Use the graduated pipette provided — filled to the base of the bulb it measures 1 mL, useful for scaling the dose down in smaller tanks. For a more complete feed, dose AquaVitro activate at the same rate for a 5:1 nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for freshwater planted aquariums where plants are actively using nitrogen — typically moderate-to-high light, CO2-supplemented setups draw it down fastest.
- Not suitable as a stand-alone complete fertiliser — Synthesis supplies nitrogen only, not phosphorus, potassium or micronutrients, so it needs pairing with the rest of a dosing range for a full feeding programme.
- Not formulated for reef or marine systems.
Safety
A concentrated product — dose into an area of good flow rather than directly onto plants or livestock. Adding nitrogen faster than plants can use it can fuel algae growth, so increase doses gradually and test rather than dosing to a fixed schedule regardless of readings.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by the standard consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law, in addition to any manufacturer assurance. Standard freight.
Common questions
Does Synthesis contain phosphorus or potassium?
No — despite the name, Synthesis is a nitrogen-only source. Dose AquaVitro activate alongside it for phosphorus, at the same rate, for a 5:1 nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio.
How much does one dose raise my nitrate reading?
Manufacturer figures show a 5 mL dose per 680 L raises total nitrogen by about 0.24 mg/L, showing as roughly a 0.25 mg/L nitrate increase straight after dosing.
How often should I dose?
Up to twice a week, or as needed based on how quickly your plants are drawing nitrogen down — test rather than dosing on a fixed schedule regardless of results.
Is the 350 mL better value than the 150 mL?
Not on a per-litre-treated basis — both work out to under a cent per litre, with the 150 mL fractionally ahead. Choose based on how often you want to reorder.
Can I use Synthesis in a marine or reef tank?
It's formulated for freshwater planted aquariums and isn't intended for reef systems.
