Single-ingredient frozen bloodworm, a natural high-protein treat. Ocean Nutrition Frozen Bloodworm is whole red mosquito larvae, flash-frozen and supplied in a 100 g blister of ready-to-thaw portions. It's a long-standing favourite for tropical freshwater fish, offering a higher-protein change of pace from a daily flake or pellet diet.

Key features
  • Single ingredient — whole bloodworm, nothing else in the pack.
  • Whole-animal form — flash-frozen to keep the larvae intact, around 1.5 cm each.
  • Blister portions — each cavity is a ready-to-thaw feed.
  • High protein relative to a dry staple — useful as an occasional boost rather than an everyday base diet.
  • Readily accepted — one of the most reliably eaten frozen foods for finicky freshwater fish.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for a wide variety of tropical freshwater fish, from small community species up to larger omnivores and carnivores that can take a 1.5 cm larva.
  • Not a complete standalone diet — rotate it with a staple flake or pellet rather than feeding it exclusively; bloodworm alone is not a balanced long-term diet.
  • Not marketed by the manufacturer as a marine food — this pack is formulated and sold for freshwater tanks.
How to thaw and feed

Snap a portion free from the blister and thaw it in a little tank water, then add the thawed larvae to the tank. Never refreeze a thawed portion — feed it or discard it. Keep the remaining blister frozen between feeds, and if the pack arrives partly thawed on a warm day, transfer it to your own freezer straight away and use it promptly rather than refreezing it.

Which Ocean Nutrition frozen food should I feed?
Food Animal size Best suited to
Bloodworm (this product) Whole, ~1.5 cm Tropical freshwater fish
Artemia Whole, ~1 cm Small community fish, nano fish, freshwater and marine
Chopped Mussel Chopped Marine fish and invertebrates
Chopped Cockle Chopped Larger predatory marine and freshwater fish

Bloodworm is the freshwater staple treat of this range; reach for the marine-suited packs for a saltwater tank instead.

Warranty and delivery

As a frozen product this pack ships and must be stored frozen. There is no manufacturer warranty on a consumable food item; the consumer guarantee under Australian Consumer Law — that the product is of acceptable quality and matches its description — applies as it would to any packaged food. Transfer the pack to your own freezer as soon as it arrives.

Common questions

Is bloodworm a complete diet on its own?

No. It's a high-value treat and protein boost, best rotated with a staple flake or pellet rather than fed as the only food.

Can I feed this to marine fish?

The manufacturer markets this product for tropical freshwater fish; it isn't formulated or sold as a marine food.

Will bloodworm cause allergic reactions in people who handle it?

Bloodworm (Chironomid larvae) is a recognised allergen for some people who handle it regularly — wash your hands after feeding and avoid it if you know you're sensitive.

How much should I feed?

Offer only what the fish will finish within about 5 minutes, 2 to 5 times a day, and remove uneaten food so it does not foul the water.

Can I refreeze a thawed portion?

No. Once a portion has thawed, feed it or discard it; refreezing lowers food safety and quality.
