Ocean Nutrition Frozen Chopped Mussel
Real mussel meat, chopped small for a wide range of marine fish. Ocean Nutrition Frozen Chopped Mussel is a single-ingredient frozen food made from cleaned mussel meat (Mytilus sp.), supplied in a 100 g blister of ready-to-thaw portions. It's a straightforward way to add marine protein and variety alongside a staple flake or pellet, and suits a broad range of smaller marine fish and invertebrates.
Key features
- Single ingredient – mussel meat only, nothing else in the pack.
- Chopped format – pieces are smaller than whole mussel meat, so more fish can take them without struggling.
- Broad marine suitability – taken by angels, clownfish, gobies, blennies, cardinals, lionfish and many marine invertebrates.
- Natural nutrient source – mussels are a natural source of selenium and vitamin B12.
- Blister portions – each cavity is a ready-to-thaw feed.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for a wide range of smaller marine fish and invertebrates, including angels, basslets, groupers, pufferfish, butterflyfish, clownfish, gobies, blennies, lionfish, mandarins and cardinals.
- Not a complete standalone diet – rotate it with a staple flake or pellet rather than feeding it exclusively.
- Not marketed by the manufacturer as a freshwater food – this pack is formulated and sold for marine tanks.
How to thaw and feed
Break off a portion from the blister and thaw it in a little tank water before feeding, rinsing lightly if you want to reduce cloudiness. Never refreeze a thawed portion – feed it or discard it. Keep the remaining blister frozen between feeds, and if the pack arrives partly thawed on a warm day, transfer it to your own freezer straight away and use it promptly rather than refreezing it.
Which Ocean Nutrition frozen food should I feed?
| Food | Animal size | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Chopped Mussel (this product) | Chopped | Smaller marine fish and invertebrates |
| Clams On The Half Shell | Whole, on shell | Grazing marine fish – puffers, triggers, wrasses |
| Chopped Cockle | Chopped | Larger predatory marine and freshwater fish |
| Artemia | Whole, ~1 cm | Small community fish, nano fish, freshwater and marine |
Mussel sits well for smaller marine fish that need a step up from artemia but can't yet manage a whole clam or larger chopped cockle.
Warranty and delivery
There is no manufacturer warranty on a consumable food item; the consumer guarantee under Australian Consumer Law – that the product is of acceptable quality and matches its description – applies as it would to any packaged food. Transfer the pack to your own freezer as soon as it arrives.
Frozen food is pick up only from our North Lakes store, because a pack that thaws on the way cannot be refrozen.
Common questions
Will this suit my reef tank's invertebrates too?
Chopped mussel is commonly fed to marine invertebrates as well as fish, though check the needs of any sensitive species such as filter feeders before adding it directly to a reef system.
Can freshwater fish eat this?
The manufacturer formulates and markets this product for marine tanks; it isn't sold as a freshwater food.
How much should I feed?
Offer only what the fish will finish within about 5 minutes, 2 to 5 times a day, and remove uneaten food so it does not foul the water.
Will it cloud the water?
A light rinse of the thawed portion before feeding, and avoiding overfeeding, keeps this to a minimum.
Can I refreeze leftovers?
No – once thawed, feed it or discard it.
