Red Sea Reefer G2+170 Complete System Black
A 165-litre rimless reef platform that ships as tank, sump and cabinet only — you choose the rest. The Red Sea REEFER 170 G2+ is the entry size in Red Sea's current-generation rimless system: a precision-drilled, ultra-clear glass aquarium plumbed into a purpose-built glass sump, sitting on a matching black cabinet. It suits reefers who already know which pump, skimmer and light they want to run, or who'd rather choose that gear themselves than pay for someone else's pick.
Key features
- Rimless, drilled display — a 128-litre display volume with a silent internal overflow, so there's no visible overflow box breaking the sightlines.
- Purpose-built 37-litre glass sump — includes a bubble trap chamber and 225-micron filter bags and media cups, sized to sit inside the cabinet footprint.
- Passive automatic top-up — a float valve tops the sump up from a built-in reservoir as water evaporates. It is not the electronic ReefATO+ controller — see Not included.
- Internal plumbing kit included — piping and an outlet nozzle are supplied, sized for the standard drilled overflow.
- Matching black cabinet — ships flat-packed and needs self-assembly; houses the sump and hides the plumbing.
- 165 litres total system volume — display plus sump, the figure that matters for salt mix and dosing calculations.

Which REEFER size do I need?
All three current REEFER G2+ sizes share the same rimless build and the same inclusion list — only the footprint, volume and glass thickness change.
| Model | Total volume | Display volume | Sump volume | Display dimensions (L×W×H) | Total height |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Black hides algae film and salt creep on the cabinet better than white — that's a styling trade-off, not a performance difference between the two finishes.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for: reef and marine keepers who want a rimless drilled tank, sump and cabinet as a base, and are sourcing their own return pump, skimmer and lighting.
- Suitable for: anyone upgrading from a rimmed tank who wants rimless sightlines without paying for equipment they already own.
- Not suitable for: buyers who want a single box that includes a skimmer, return pump and lighting at purchase — that's the Reefer MAX range, not this one.
- Not suitable for: anyone who needs the tank ready to fill and run on day one — budget for a return pump, skimmer and light before you commission it.
Warranty and delivery
Red Sea backs the REEFER G2+ range with a 3-year manufacturer's warranty, extendable to 5 years at no extra cost when you register the tank with Red Sea within the promotion's eligibility window — in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. This is a large glass item delivered on a pallet; the cabinet arrives flat-packed and needs assembly, and you should plan for a level, load-rated floor before the tank goes in. A filled 170 holds up to 165 kg of water alone, before the glass, cabinet, sump and substrate are counted.
Goes well with
- Red Sea ReefRun G2 4000 DC Pump — a DC return pump from Red Sea's own range; check the flow you need against your plumbing run before choosing a size.
- Red Sea Reefer Skimmer 300 PSK600 — from Red Sea's Reefer skimmer range, sized to your bioload rather than tank volume alone.
- Red Sea ReefLED 90 — a mounting-ready LED fixture from the same generation of hardware.
- Red Sea Reefer ATO Upgrade Kit — upgrades the standard float valve to the electronic ReefATO+ system.
- Red Sea Salt 20kg Refill Box — mixes enough saltwater for a water change plus top-ups on this size system.
Common questions
Does the REEFER 170 G2+ include a protein skimmer?
No. It ships with the tank, sump and cabinet only. A protein skimmer, return pump and lighting are all sold separately, so you can choose them to suit your stocking plan and budget.
What's the difference between the included float valve and ReefATO+?
The float valve that ships with the system is a passive mechanical device — it opens and closes to keep the sump topped up from the built-in reservoir. Red Sea's ReefATO+ is a separate electronic controller with a temperature sensor and leak detection; it is not included as standard, but can be added with the Reefer ATO Upgrade Kit.
Is the cabinet pre-assembled?
No. The cabinet is flat-packed and needs to be assembled before the tank goes on top of it.
Can I run this on fresh water instead of a reef?
The drilled overflow and sump are built with marine use in mind, but nothing stops a freshwater setup — you'd simply be running the sump and plumbing without salt-specific gear like a skimmer.
Will my existing return pump and skimmer fit the sump?
Most standard aquarium pumps and skimmers will fit the sump's chambers, but check your pump's flow rating against the 37-litre sump and your skimmer's footprint against the sump chamber dimensions before you buy.
