Red Sea ReefMat Filter 1200
Continuous mechanical filtration for the biggest reef sumps, with weeks between roll changes. The Red Sea ReefMat 1200 is the largest of Red Sea's automatic fleece roller filters, rated for systems up to 1,200 L and a maximum flow of 9,000 L/h. It replaces filter socks with a continuously advancing sheet of fleece, so waste is trapped and physically removed from the water rather than sitting in a sock rotting until someone remembers to change it.
Key features
- Automatic advance – a built-in sensor detects when the fleece has loaded and advances only then, rather than on a fixed timer.
- 9,000 L/h maximum flow capacity – sized for large sumps and heavy bioloads, well beyond what sock filtration can sustain at this scale.
- 17 cm x 35 m fleece roll – weeks of continuous filtration per roll on a heavily stocked system, longer on a lighter one.
- Removes waste before it decays – trapped particles are wound away from the flow immediately, unlike a sock or sponge that holds waste in the water column until it's cleaned.
- ReefBeat app connectivity – monitor roll life and advance events remotely instead of checking the unit by eye.
- Fits REEFER G3, G2+, G2 and MAX systems, plus older REEFER models – some installations need sump modification, others are plug-and-play; check your specific sump generation before ordering.

Which ReefMat do I need?
| Model | Recommended volume | Max flow | Roll size |
|---|---|---|---|
| ReefMat 250 | Up to 250 L | 3,500 L/h | 8 cm x 32 m |
| ReefMat 500 | Up to 500 L | 6,000 L/h | 11.3 cm x 28 m |
| ReefMat 1200 | Up to 1,200 L | 9,000 L/h | 17 cm x 35 m |
Size to your system's actual flow through the sump, not just its display volume – a high-turnover 500 L system can outrun the 500's flow rating and need the 1200 instead. If you're unsure which model your sump plumbing was designed for, check against the ReefMat 500 specifications before ordering.
Performance
Red Sea does not publish a flow-versus-fleece-load curve for the ReefMat range – the 9,000 L/h figure is the unit's maximum rated capacity, not a guaranteed in-service number once fleece has partially loaded. In practice this matters less than it would on a conventional filter: the sensor detects rising resistance as the fleece loads and advances the roll automatically, rather than requiring the flow to be maintained against an increasingly clogged sock. Ask us for Red Sea's technical documentation if you want to plan sump turnover around a worst-case figure rather than the rated maximum.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suited to large reef systems up to around 1,200 L with a sump built or modified to accept the unit, particularly heavily stocked SPS and mixed reef displays where sock filtration would need daily attention. Not the right size for anything smaller than roughly 500–800 L in practice – the ReefMat 500 is the better fit and the cheaper roll to run at that scale. Not a substitute for biological or chemical filtration; it handles mechanical waste removal only.
What's included
- ReefMat 1200 drive unit and housing
- One fleece roll (17 cm x 35 m)
- Power supply
Not included
- Sump plumbing or fittings specific to your tank – check compatibility with your sump generation before ordering
- Additional fleece rolls beyond the one supplied
Care and maintenance
Routine maintenance is a roll change every few weeks depending on bioload, and an occasional wipe of the loading sensor – algae film on the sensor is the most common cause of erratic advancing. The ReefMat Fleece Mat 1200 is the matching replacement roll. If the drive stops advancing altogether, the ReefMat 500/1200 Drive Unit and Drive Unit Repair Kit are the genuine spares; if it advances constantly or not at all with the drive running normally, check the ReefMat 500/1200 Sensor first.
Safety
Mains-powered – run the included power supply through an RCD-protected circuit and keep a drip loop on the cable where it enters the sump area.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Red Sea's manufacturer warranty against defects, in addition to your consumer guarantee rights under Australian Consumer Law. This is a large, boxed item – expect standard parcel or small-freight delivery rather than a pallet service.
Goes well with
- ReefMat Fleece Mat 1200 – the replacement roll, for when the supplied roll runs out
- ReefMat 1200 Inlet Hose – for a plumbing run that needs a fresh hose
- ReefMat 1200 Hose Connector Kit – for non-standard sump fittings
- ReefMat 500/1200 Drive Unit and ReefMat 500/1200 Sensor – genuine spares worth keeping on hand for a long-running system
Common questions
Will the ReefMat 1200 fit my Reefer sump without modification?
It depends on the generation. Red Sea lists REEFER G3, G2+ and G2 systems, plus MAX models and older REEFER generations, as compatible – some are plug-and-play, others need sump modification. Check your specific model before ordering, or ask us to confirm.
How often do I need to change the roll?
Red Sea doesn't publish a fixed interval – it depends on bioload and flow through the sump. Expect it to run for weeks rather than days on a well-maintained system; the ReefBeat app tracks roll life so you're not guessing.
Is 9,000 L/h the flow I'll actually see through my sump?
It's the unit's maximum rated capacity, not a number Red Sea guarantees in service – actual flow depends on your plumbing and pump. Treat it as a ceiling, not a promise.
What's the difference between this and the ReefMat 500?
Recommended volume and flow capacity, roll size, and physical footprint all step up – the 1200 suits systems in the 500–1,200 L range, the 500 suits roughly 250–500 L. See the comparison table above.
