Zoo Med Hermit Crab Sand Green
A colourful, calcium-rich base for a hermit crab habitat. Zoo Med Hermit Crab Sand in Green is a natural calcium carbonate sand that gives your crabitat a bright, distinctive floor while supplying a source of dietary calcium — hermit crabs pick up trace calcium as they forage and walk across the substrate, on top of whatever they get from a dedicated calcium supplement.
Key features
- Calcium carbonate base — a natural source of calcium, important for a hermit crab's exoskeleton and moult cycle.
- Naturally pigmented colour — Zoo Med's coloured hermit crab sands use natural pigments rather than paint or dye.
- Fine, sand-like texture — holds its shape when lightly dampened, so crabs can dig stable burrows.
- Supports deep digging — a workable base for the burrowing hermit crabs need to do before and during a moult.
- 0.9 kg bag — sized to top up or refresh part of an existing crabitat floor.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable as a floor substrate for land hermit crab enclosures. Not recommended as the sole substrate in setups that need a deep, moisture-holding burrowing medium such as coco fibre — most keepers blend or layer calcium sand with a moisture-retentive substrate rather than using it alone, particularly in larger or bioactive setups.
Care and maintenance
Keep the substrate at "sandcastle" dampness — damp enough to hold its shape when pressed, not wet — and deep enough for your largest crab to bury itself completely, which crabs need to do safely during a moult. Spot-clean daily with a scoop and sieve rather than replacing the full depth of substrate every time.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by the standard Zoo Med manufacturer warranty against defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard parcel delivery.
Common questions
Does the colour change what the sand is made of?
No — Zoo Med's hermit crab sand is the same calcium carbonate base across every colour; the pigment is natural and doesn't change how the substrate functions.
How deep should I fill the enclosure?
Deep enough for your largest crab to fully bury itself, since crabs dig down to moult. In a mixed-size colony, base the depth on your biggest resident.
Can I mix this with other substrates?
Yes — many keepers layer or blend calcium sand with a moisture-holding substrate like coco fibre, rather than filling the whole enclosure with sand alone.
Is it a problem if a crab eats some while digging?
Incidental ingestion while foraging is expected and is part of why the substrate is marketed as a calcium source. It isn't intended to replace a dedicated calcium supplement.
