Bioscape Velocity Internal Filter
A modular internal filter with performance to match five tank sizes. The Bioscape Velocity Internal Filter is a three-stage internal canister, sold across five flow ratings from 400 to 2000 L/h so you can match the pump to the tank rather than running one filter over- or under-sized.
Key features
- Three-stage filtration — particulate foam, activated carbon and a phosphate pad in one modular housing, covering mechanical, chemical and phosphate-removal filtration in a single unit.
- Segment-by-segment media changes — the housing pulls apart in stages so you can service one media type without disturbing the others.
- Optional aeration — fit the included air inlet pipe and a regulator to add surface agitation and oxygenation without a separate air pump.
- Five sizes, one range — 400, 700, 1000, 1500 and 2000 L/h, rated for tanks up to 40 L, 70 L, 100 L, 150 L and 200 L respectively.
- Freshwater and marine safe — the housing and media are suitable across both tank types.

Which one do I need?
Match the model to your tank volume first, then size up if your tank is heavily stocked, has strong water flow requirements, or you want faster turnover for a planted or high-bioload setup. Fry, bettas and axolotls prefer gentler flow, so consider sizing down and turning the outlet toward the glass instead of up-sizing. As a rough guide, all five models turn over their rated tank volume around ten times an hour at full rated flow.
Performance — flow against lift
The rated L/h figure on the box is measured at zero head, straight out of the housing with no lift and clean media. Bioscape publishes a maximum head for each model — the height it can no longer push water to — but not a full curve between the two points. Expect real-world flow to sit below the rated figure once the outlet is aimed upward or across the tank, and to fall further as the foam and carbon load with debris between services.
| Model | Flow at 0 m head (rated) | Flow at max head |
|---|---|---|
| 400 | 400 L/h | 0 L/h at 0.7 m |
| 700 | 700 L/h | 0 L/h at 0.9 m |
| 1000 | 1000 L/h | 0 L/h at 1.1 m |
| 1500 | 1500 L/h | 0 L/h at 1.6 m |
| 2000 | 2000 L/h | 0 L/h at 2.0 m |
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater and marine aquariums within the rated tank size for each model. Not intended as the sole filtration on a heavily stocked marine or reef system at the top of its rated range — those setups are usually better served sizing up or running a second filter.
Running costs
Run continuously, as internal filters normally are, the range works out to roughly 53 to 263 kWh a year across the 400 to 2000 models — about $16 to $79 a year at a 30c/kWh tariff. The smaller models cost only a few dollars a year to run; it's the 1500 and 2000 that are worth weighing against a smaller external canister if running cost matters to you.
Care and maintenance
Rinse the particulate foam in tank water (not tap water) whenever it's visibly clogged, and replace it once it loses structural integrity rather than on a fixed schedule. Replace the activated carbon every 6–8 weeks and the phosphate pad every 4–6 weeks — both stop working once exhausted even though they don't look different. Replacement media and spare parts (impeller, motor unit, suction cups) are available separately.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Bioscape's manufacturer warranty against defects, in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
Common questions
Which size do I need for a 100 L tank?
The 1000 L/h model is rated to 100 L. If the tank is heavily stocked or you want faster turnover, the 1500 will also fit most 100 L setups without overwhelming smaller fish.
How often do I need to change the media?
Carbon every 6–8 weeks, the phosphate pad every 4–6 weeks, and the foam whenever it's breaking down — usually less often than the other two.
Can I use it in a marine tank?
Yes, the housing and supplied media are rated for both freshwater and marine use.
Does it come with an air pump?
No — it has a fitting for an optional air inlet pipe and regulator so you can add aeration from an external air pump if you want it; an air pump itself isn't included.
Why is my actual flow lower than the rated L/h?
The rated figure is measured at zero head with clean media. Any lift on the outlet, plus normal debris loading in the foam and carbon between services, will bring the real-world flow down — that's expected, not a fault.
