Forest Canopy Tropical High Power LED Lamp 8w/6500K
Daylight-toned LED light that grows real terrarium plants, with no UVB output. The Exo Terra Forest Canopy LED (8 W, 6500K) is a self-ballasted, screw-fit plant-growth lamp for bioactive and densely planted terrariums, tuned to a blue, green, red and far-red spectrum that suits orchids, bromeliads, air plants, carnivorous plants, mosses and lichen. It's a visible-light lamp only: reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates that need UVB still need a separate UVB lamp run alongside it.
Key features
- 6500K daylight spectrum — blue, green, red and traces of far-red wavelengths, tuned for photosynthesis in tropical terrarium plants.
- 8 W, self-ballasted E27 screw fitting — no separate ballast or driver needed, fits standard ceramic E27 sockets.
- 300° rotatable base — aim the beam at the planted zone rather than the whole enclosure.
- Runs on 220–240 V, 50 Hz — suits a standard Australian household supply.
- Rated for terrariums housing reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates — per the manufacturer.

Which Forest Canopy lamp do I need?
The Forest Canopy (6500K) is the crisp daylight half of Exo Terra's two-lamp plant range; the Deep Forest (4500K, PT2409) is the warmer half. Both are 8 W, E27, ceramic-holder-only lamps with the same 300° rotating base — they differ only in colour temperature. Run one alone for a single-tone look, or both together for a fuller, more natural-reading spectrum.
Suitable for — and not suitable for
Suited to bioactive and heavily planted terrariums — orchids, bromeliads, air plants, carnivorous plants, mosses and lichen — and safe to run over enclosures housing reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates. Not a UVB source: it supplies visible light for plant growth and display colour only, so any reptile or amphibian in the enclosure that needs UVB still needs a dedicated UVB lamp fitted separately.
Safety
- Fit only in a ceramic bulb holder — Exo Terra's instructions explicitly rule out plastic holders with this lamp.
- Runs on a standard 220–240 V, 50 Hz AU household supply; no external ballast or transformer required.
- Allow the lamp to cool before handling after use, as with any high-power screw-fit bulb.
Running costs
At 8 W, run on a typical 12-hour terrarium photoperiod, this lamp draws roughly 35 kWh a year — around $10.50 a year at a 30c/kWh tariff. Actual cost will vary with your electricity plan and photoperiod length.
Care and maintenance
Exo Terra doesn't publish a rated lifespan for this LED. Keep an eye on plant growth and light output over time and replace the lamp if either noticeably declines.
Goes well with
- The Deep Forest 4500K LED (PT2409), to pair with this lamp for a fuller plant-growth spectrum.
- An Exo Terra Compact Top fixture, built around the ceramic holder this lamp requires.
- A dedicated UVB lamp, where the enclosure houses a reptile or amphibian that needs one — this lamp doesn't supply UVB.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by the standard consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law, in addition to any manufacturer term. Ships from our Brisbane / North Lakes warehouse.
Common questions
Does this lamp provide UVB for my reptile?
No. It's a visible-light plant-growth lamp only. Any reptile or amphibian that needs UVB still needs a separate UVB lamp fitted alongside it.
Can I use a plastic bulb holder with this lamp?
No — Exo Terra's instructions require a ceramic holder for this lamp; plastic holders aren't rated for it.
What's the difference between this and the Deep Forest LED?
Both are 8 W, E27, ceramic-holder plant-growth lamps with a 300° rotating base. This one (Forest Canopy) is 6500K and daylight-toned; the Deep Forest is 4500K and warmer-toned.
How long will this LED last?
Exo Terra doesn't publish a rated lifespan for this lamp, so we haven't stated one. Watch your plants' growth and the lamp's brightness over time as a practical guide to replacement.
