Red Sea ReefRun G2 8000 DC Pump
More lift, more flow, same quiet DC platform. The Red Sea ReefRun G2 8000 is a submersible DC sump return pump rated 4,100–8,300 L/h at zero head, with a maximum head height of 5.3 m. It suits larger reef sumps, or systems with a longer plumbing run and more head loss to fight, where a 6000 would not have enough headroom.
Key features
- 4,100–8,300 L/h adjustable flow — dial speed to the system rather than running flat out, at 24–73 W depending on setting.
- 5.3 m maximum head — the deepest lift in the ReefRun G2 range below the 12000, useful for tall cabinets or a sump on a lower floor than the display.
- Sine-wave DC motor — Red Sea describes it as virtually silent from a standstill through full speed; no published dB figure.
- Fully submersible — installs inside the sump, with a 180° rotatable outlet for aiming the return without repiping.
- Inline Flow Controller included — manual on/off and speed control with no network needed; the ReefRun Dual Controller (sold separately) adds ReefBeat app scheduling and remote monitoring.
- Two-latch impeller access — service without disturbing the plumbing.

As with the rest of the ReefRun G2 range, Red Sea does not publish an input voltage rating or a decibel figure in the documentation we could access — we have left both off this page rather than guess.
Which ReefRun do I need?
| Model | Flow at 0 m head | Max head | Power |
|---|---|---|---|
| ReefRun G2 4000 | 2,000–4,000 L/h | 3.4 m | 16–38 W |
| ReefRun G2 6000 | 3,600–6,500 L/h | 4.4 m | 22–56 W |
| ReefRun G2 8000 (this pump) | 4,100–8,300 L/h | 5.3 m | 24–73 W |
| ReefRun G2 12000 | 5,000–12,000 L/h | 5.8 m | 33–105 W |
The 8000 earns its place over the 6000 once you are pushing water up through more than a metre or so of drain plumbing, an inline UV steriliser, or a media reactor on the return line — situations where the flow lost to head and restriction eats a bigger share of the headline number.
Performance
| Head height | Flow |
|---|---|
| 0 m (zero head) | 4,100–8,300 L/h, adjustable by speed setting |
| 5.3 m (maximum head) | 0 L/h — the pump stalls at this lift |
Red Sea publishes the zero-head flow range and the maximum head figure but not a full flow-against-head curve at intermediate points (0.5 m, 1 m, 1.5 m, 2 m, 3 m); we have not found one in its manuals or on its site. Treat the 4,100–8,300 L/h figure as a best case.
Running costs
Running continuously at a mid-speed setting of roughly 48.5 W (the midpoint of the published 24–73 W range) works out to about 425 kWh a year, or roughly $128 on a 30c/kWh tariff — your own tariff and flow setting will move that figure up or down.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suited to larger marine and reef sumps, or any system with enough head loss that a 6000 would be working near its limit. Red Sea markets it for reef systems; we have not found a manufacturer statement on freshwater use either way. Not a substitute for an in-tank powerhead or wavemaker — it returns water from the sump, it does not circulate the display.
Care and maintenance
The two-latch impeller housing gives tool-free access — rinse the impeller and housing of calcium buildup or debris at your regular maintenance interval. The impeller is a wear item with its own 6-month warranty, shorter than the 2-year motor warranty.
Safety
Mains-powered equipment — run it through an RCD-protected circuit and keep a drip loop on the power cable.
Warranty and delivery
Red Sea covers the motor for 2 years and the impeller, as a wear item, for 6 months — both in addition to your consumer guarantee rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard parcel delivery.
Common questions
Does this include a controller?
A basic Inline Flow Controller is included for manual on/off and speed control without Wi-Fi. The ReefRun Dual Controller, adding ReefBeat app scheduling and remote monitoring, is sold separately.
Is it submersible?
Yes — Red Sea's manual specifies installation "fully submerged, inside a sump."
Will I really get 8,300 L/h in my system?
Only at zero head, out of the box with nothing plumbed to it. Once it is lifting water through your drain, elbows and skimmer, expect noticeably less — size with margin rather than against the headline figure.
What voltage does it run on?
We have not been able to confirm a published input voltage figure for this model. Get in touch before ordering if you need it confirmed.
