Reptile Habba Hut Small

A solid timber hide gives a nervous reptile somewhere to settle. The Zoo Med Habba Hut Small is a hollow half-log shelter cut from natural fir, measuring approximately 5.1 x 11.4 x 8.3 cm. It suits hatchlings, small geckos and other animals that fit comfortably under an 11 cm span. Zoo Med states the dimensions are approximate, because every hut is cut from real timber and no two are identical.

Key features
  • Cut from natural fir — real timber rather than moulded plastic or resin, so it reads as part of a naturalistic setup instead of sitting on top of it.
  • A true hide — a hide (a shelter an animal gets right inside, out of sight) is the single cheapest way to lower stress in a newly rehomed or shy animal.
  • Takes moss inside — Zoo Med notes that terrarium moss can be added inside the Habba Hut to turn it into a humid shelter, which helps during a shed.
  • Open underneath — it sits directly on substrate, so an animal that likes to burrow can dig down inside it.
  • Five sizes in the range — Small through Giant share the same shape, so the hide can scale as the animal grows.
  • Not reptile-only — Zoo Med also lists the Habba Hut for hamsters, mice, rats, ferrets, hedgehogs and guinea pigs.

Which Habba Hut size do I need?

Zoo Med publishes five sizes. All dimensions are approximate for the same reason.

Size Item number Dimensions (cm) Dimensions (in)
Small HH-S 5.1 x 11.4 x 8.3 2 x 4.5 x 3.25
Medium HH-M 7.0 x 12.1 x 12.7 2.75 x 4.75 x 5
Large HH-L 9.5 x 19.1 x 17.8 3.75 x 7.5 x 7
X-Large HH-XL 10.2 x 23.5 x 22.9 4 x 9.25 x 9
Giant HH-G 14.0 x 24.1 x 27.9 5.5 x 9.5 x 11
Will it fit my enclosure?

Two measurements decide it. The hut needs about 11.4 cm of clear floor length and 8.3 cm of headroom above the substrate, and the animal needs to fit inside it with its body fully covered.

As a rule of thumb, pick the size where the animal can coil or sit inside without pressing against the walls, but not so large that the space stops feeling enclosed. A hide an animal rattles around in gets used less than one that fits snugly.

If you are heating from above, keep the hut clear of the basking zone directly under the lamp. A hide is meant to be the cool, dark end of the gradient.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for

  • Hatchling and juvenile reptiles, and small adult geckos and skinks that fit under an 11 cm span
  • Hermit crabs and other small terrarium invertebrates
  • Mice, hamsters and similarly sized small pets, per Zoo Med's own listing
  • Dry and moderately humid setups, and as a humid hide once moss is added inside

Not suitable for

  • Adult bearded dragons, blue-tongue skinks, adult pythons or anything else that cannot physically fit — step up to Large, X-Large or Giant
  • Permanently saturated enclosures. Fir is porous, and timber left constantly wet will eventually grow mould and need replacing
  • Animals that gnaw persistently. It is real wood, not a chew-proof shelter, and rodents in particular will reduce it over time
  • Full submersion in an aquarium
Care and maintenance

Brush or scrape off soiled substrate and waste as part of normal spot cleaning. For a deeper clean, wipe the hut with a reptile-safe cleaner, rinse any residue off thoroughly, and let it dry completely before returning it to the enclosure.

Timber cannot be boiled, bleached or run through a dishwasher without damage, so treat it as a replaceable item rather than a permanent fixture. Replace the hut if it stays damp, softens, smells sour or shows mould that will not brush away.

If you add moss inside for humidity, change the moss regularly — it is the moss, not the timber, that fouls first.

Warranty and delivery

Zoo Med does not publish a warranty term for the Habba Hut, which is normal for a natural timber consumable. Whatever the manufacturer offers, your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply in addition and are not limited by it.

Freight class is Standard. The hut ships as an ordinary parcel with no dangerous goods, oversize or cold chain handling.

Common questions

What size animal does the Small Habba Hut suit?

The Zoo Med Habba Hut Small measures approximately 5.1 x 11.4 x 8.3 cm, so it suits hatchlings, small geckos, small skinks, hermit crabs and mice — animals that can sit fully inside an 11 cm long shelter. Larger reptiles need the Medium, Large, X-Large or Giant size.

Can the Habba Hut be used as a humid hide?

Yes. Zoo Med states that terrarium moss can be added inside the Habba Hut to provide a humid shelter. Damp moss inside a closed hide raises local humidity, which is what most reptiles want during a shed. Change the moss regularly, as damp moss fouls faster than the timber does.

How do you clean a Zoo Med Habba Hut?

Spot clean by brushing off soiled substrate, then wipe with a reptile-safe cleaner, rinse off residue and dry the hut completely before it goes back in. Fir is porous and cannot be boiled or bleached without damage, so a Habba Hut is a replaceable item — swap it out if it stays damp, softens or grows mould.

Will my reptile chew or destroy it?

The Habba Hut is real fir, not a chew-proof shelter. Most reptiles ignore it, but rodents and persistent gnawers will wear it down over time. That is normal for a timber hide rather than a fault.

Why does my Habba Hut look different to the photo?

Every Habba Hut is cut from natural fir, so grain, colour and exact profile vary between pieces and Zoo Med lists all dimensions as approximate. The product photograph is representative rather than an image of the specific hut you receive.
