Zoo Med BettaTherm Betta Heater

A pocket-sized heater built for one-fish, one-bowl setups. The Zoo Med BettaTherm is a 7.5 W submersible heater sized for 1–3 US gallon (3.8–11.4 L) betta bowls and small tanks, lifting water temperature roughly 5–10°F (2.7–5.4°C) above room temperature so a betta kept in a bowl on a cool bench or in an air-conditioned room can sit in the 24.5–26.7°C range it needs, without the cost or footprint of a full aquarium heater.

Key features
  • Fully submersible – can be buried under up to 2.5 cm of sand or gravel and hidden from view.
  • Sized for small volumes – built specifically for 1–3 US gallon (3.8–11.4 L) bowls and nano tanks, where most full-size aquarium heaters are oversized.
  • Preset operation – no dial to set or misread; the heater runs to lift water 5–10°F (2.7–5.4°C) over ambient and holds there.
  • Glass and acrylic safe – suits both bowl and small tank materials.

Heat sizing – why 7.5 W is enough here

Zoo Med builds the BettaTherm as a single fixed-wattage heater for 1–3 US gallon (3.8–11.4 L) bowls only, rather than publishing a wattage-per-litre table across tank sizes – at this volume, 7.5 W is enough to hold the stated 5–10°F (2.7–5.4°C) rise in a typical Australian living room. For anything larger than 3 US gallons (11.4 L), or a room that runs consistently cold, step up to a variable-wattage aquarium heater sized to the tank instead.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for betta bowls and nano tanks from 1 to 3 US gallons (3.8–11.4 L) that need a gentle, low-wattage lift above room temperature. Not suitable for larger aquariums, and not intended to run dry – it must stay fully submerged whenever it is switched on.

Safety

Mains-powered and fully submersible: plug into a GFCI/RCD-protected outlet with a drip loop in the cord, never let the heater run dry, and unplug it before doing any tank maintenance or placing a hand in the water. It is not a repairable item – a faulty unit should be returned rather than opened.

Care and maintenance

Wipe any algae or mineral build-up from the heater body during routine bowl cleaning, and check the cord and body for cracks before each use. Always unplug before removing the heater from the water.

Warranty and delivery

Covered by Zoo Med's manufacturer warranty against defects; contact us with your order details if you believe the unit has failed. Warranty is in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law.

Common questions

Will this heat a standard 10-gallon tank?

No – it's built for 1–3 US gallon (3.8–11.4 L) bowls and nano tanks. A larger aquarium needs a heater sized to that volume.

Can I bury it under gravel?

Yes, up to about 2.5 cm of sand or gravel, as long as it stays fully submerged.

Is the temperature adjustable?

No. It's a preset heater that lifts water roughly 5–10°F (2.7–5.4°C) above room temperature rather than holding a dial-set target.

What temperature do bettas actually need?

Most bettas do best around 24.5–26.7°C (76–80°F); this heater is designed to help reach that range from typical Australian room temperatures.

Goes well with

Pairs with an aquarium thermometer to confirm the bowl has reached a safe temperature, since this heater's rise is preset rather than dial-adjustable.
