Zoo Med Floating Betta Exercise Mirror

A few minutes of flaring in front of a mirror gives a Betta the exercise a solo tank can't provide. The Zoo Med Floating Betta Exercise Mirror suspends a small mirror from a floating ball on the water's surface, so your Betta sees its own reflection and responds with the natural territorial flaring, fin-spreading and gill-flaring it would show toward a rival fish. Used briefly and supervised, it's a simple way to add enrichment to a single-Betta setup.

Key features
  • Floating ball suspension – sits on the surface and drifts naturally rather than fixing to the glass.
  • Small mirror – sized to trigger a Betta's territorial response without overwhelming a small tank or bowl.
  • No tank modification – floats freely, with nothing to stick or clip to the glass.
  • Reusable enrichment tool – take it out between sessions rather than leaving it in permanently.
How to use it

Introduce the mirror for short, supervised sessions rather than leaving it in the tank around the clock. Around five minutes, once or twice a day, gives the flaring response without tipping into ongoing stress. Watch your Betta's colour and behaviour during and after each session. Vivid flaring that settles back to normal colour afterwards is the goal; fading colour, clamped fins or reluctance to feed afterward means the sessions are too long or too frequent for that fish.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for single-Betta setups, as a short, supervised enrichment session.
  • Not suitable for permanent or constant use – extended exposure to a "rival" can raise stress rather than relieve it.
  • Not a substitute for tank enrichment such as plants, caves and a properly cycled, appropriately sized tank.
  • Not intended for community tanks holding other Betta or territorial species that may also react to the mirror.

Common questions

How long should I leave the mirror in the tank?

Around five minutes, once or twice a day, is a reasonable starting point. Watch your Betta's response and shorten the session if colour fades or fins clamp rather than flare.

Will this stress my Betta?

Short, occasional sessions typically produce a burst of natural flaring behaviour followed by a return to normal colour. Leaving a mirror in constantly, or using it several times an hour, is more likely to cause ongoing stress than enrichment.

Does it work in a bowl as well as a tank?

Yes. It floats freely on the surface, so it works in any water body large enough for the ball to sit and drift.

Can I use it with more than one Betta?

Use one mirror per Betta and keep sessions separate. Betta are territorial toward each other as well as toward their own reflection, so the mirror is never a way to introduce two Betta to the same water.
