Exo Terra All Glass Large Wide Terrarium 90 x 45 x 45cm
The first size in this range with room to mount a lamp properly.
The Exo Terra All Glass Large Wide Terrarium (90 × 45 × 45 cm / 36 × 18 × 18 in) is the largest of the Wide/Low format terrariums in the Exo Terra range. It offers roughly 4,050 cm² of floor and, more importantly, 45 cm of height – half again the 30 cm of the Low models, which is what finally gives a UVB or basking lamp a workable mounting distance. The Rock Terrarium Background is included.
Key features
- 45 cm of height – the specification that separates this model from the rest of the range. Screen-mounted lamps sit far enough back for most UVB charts to apply.
- 90 cm long axis – a full metre short of nothing: enough length to hold a hot basking end and a cool retreat that genuinely differ.
- Roughly 4,050 cm² of floor – double the 45 cm Low and half again the 60 cm Low.
- Dual front-opening doors with locks – access from the side across a 90 cm span, without lifting a lid over the animal.
- Removable stainless steel mesh top – passes UVB and infrared, and lifts away entirely for a strip-down.
- Patented front window ventilation – air is drawn up the inside of the front glass, which is what keeps a 90 cm viewing pane from fogging.
- Raised waterproof base and extra-high front pane – built for deep substrate, a drainage layer or a shallow water section.
- Five closable wire and tube inlets – enough for two probes, a heat lead and a misting line.
What's included

Buy this size for the height as much as the floor. The three smaller models all stop at 30 cm, which forces a compromise on lamp mounting distance; this one does not. If your animal is terrestrial and your lamp is low-output, the 60 × 45 × 30 cm Low does the same job for less. If it climbs, or needs a UVB lamp with a real minimum distance, this is the model in the range that works.
What you can mount above it
At 45 cm of height, a lamp sitting on the screen top is far enough from the floor for most published UV index charts to be usable. This is the practical difference between this model and the Low range.
| Where the animal sits | Approximate distance below the screen top |
|---|---|
| On the substrate | Under 45 cm |
| On a hide or rock around 10 cm high | Under 35 cm |
| On a basking branch around 20 cm up | Under 25 cm |
| On a high basking platform around 30 cm up | Under 15 cm |
Two things reduce these figures further: deep substrate raises the floor, and the mesh top absorbs part of the UVB passing through it, so the UV index reaching the animal is lower than a lamp's open-air chart shows. Read the lamp's own chart, then verify with a UV meter at the actual basking site. Exo Terra does not publish an internal clear height for this model.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for
- Species whose published minimum footprint fits within 90 × 45 cm and which need real lamp clearance
- Climbing and semi-arboreal animals, within the limits of 45 cm of height
- Planted and bioactive builds with a drainage layer and deep substrate
- Setups using a UVB lamp with a stated minimum mounting distance
- Display setups where the 90 cm front pane is the point
Not suitable for
- Adult central bearded dragons as a permanent home – Australian care guidance generally calls for a longer enclosure than 90 cm. Check the current guidance for your species rather than assuming a 3 ft glass tank is enough.
- Large monitors, adult pythons and other animals that outgrow a 90 cm footprint
- Tall arboreal species that need vertical range beyond 45 cm
- Standing on a shelf or sideboard not rated for the load – see below
- Full aquatic housing
Weight, stands and floor loading
Glass at this size is heavy before anything goes in it, and substrate, rock and water add a lot more. Exo Terra does not publish an empty weight for this model, so treat the following as handling advice rather than a specification: plan for two people to move it, set it up in its final position rather than carrying it loaded, and stand it on a cabinet or rack rated for the load with a level, fully supported top. A partially supported glass base is how terrariums crack.
Care and maintenance
- Take the screen top off for deep cleaning. Reaching across 90 cm through the front doors is not practical.
- Spot-clean daily; strip the substrate on the interval your species and substrate require.
- Clean the 90 cm front pane with a reptile-safe cleaner, never an ammonia-based household product.
- Re-measure the gradient after any change to lamp position, decor or substrate depth. On a 90 cm run it is easy to end up with a cool end that is too cool.
- Check both door locks and the screen lock at every close-up.
- Brush mineral deposits off the stainless mesh at each strip-down, particularly under the lamp.
Goes well with
- Eco Tech EZY SET Digital Thermostat – not optional on an enclosure with a basking lamp.
- Zoo Med Repti Lamp Stand Unit – lets you set the exact lamp height rather than accepting whatever the screen gives you.
- Eco Tech Dual Probe Digital Thermometer – warm end and cool end at once across the 90 cm run.
- Exo Terra Calcium + D3 Powder – dusting supplement for insect-fed species.
- Exo Terra Low Terrarium 60 × 45 × 30 cm – the cheaper option if you do not need the height.
Warranty, delivery and Australian notes
Exo Terra warrants this terrarium against defects in materials and workmanship. Any manufacturer warranty applies in addition to the consumer guarantees you have under the Australian Consumer Law, which cannot be excluded.
This is an oversize fragile glass item. It travels as freight rather than as a parcel, needs two people to handle, and should be checked for damage as soon as it arrives, before unpacking.
The terrarium carries no electrical parts or approval marking. Every lamp, emitter or mat added must be 240 V, 50 Hz with an Australian plug, and every heat source must run through a thermostat.
Common questions
Is the Exo Terra Large Wide Terrarium big enough for an adult bearded dragon?
Probably not as a permanent home. At 90 cm long it sits below what current Australian care guidance generally recommends for an adult central bearded dragon, even though the 45 cm height handles UVB mounting well. Check the guidance for your species before buying rather than treating a 3 ft glass tank as a default.
What does the extra 15 cm of height over the Low models actually buy?
Usable lamp distance. A screen-mounted lamp sits under 45 cm from the substrate here versus under 30 cm on a Low model, which brings most published UVB index charts into range and reduces the risk of overexposure at the basking site.
Does the background come fitted?
The Exo Terra Rock Terrarium Background is included in the box and sits against the rear glass. It is cut for wires and tubing. It also reduces usable depth slightly, so allow for that if floor area is your reason for buying this size.
Can I put it on a normal sideboard?
Only if the top is level, fully supports the whole base, and is rated for the loaded weight. Exo Terra does not publish an empty weight, so err heavily on the side of caution and use a purpose-built cabinet or rack.
How much UVB does the mesh top block?
Stainless steel mesh absorbs a meaningful share of the UVB passing through it, and the exact figure depends on the mesh and the lamp. Any UV index a lamp manufacturer quotes is an open-air measurement, so verify at the basking site with a UV meter rather than trusting the chart through mesh.
Can I run a water section or paludarium in it?
A shallow water section is possible because the base is waterproof and the front pane is extra-high. Exo Terra publishes no maximum water depth for this model, so keep any water shallow and do not treat the enclosure as an aquarium.
