Hikari Saki Marine Carnivore-40g
A probiotic pellet built for meat-eating marine fish, not a general-purpose flake. Saki-Hikari Marine Carnivore is a 47% protein sinking pellet fortified with a live Bacillus subtilis culture, designed as the primary diet for marine carnivorous fish rather than an occasional supplement.
The probiotic addition is the point of difference over a standard marine pellet: Hikari's Saki-Hikari line is built around supporting digestion and immune function alongside raw nutrition, and this recipe carries a high vitamin C level to match.
Key features
- 47% crude protein minimum — a high-protein formulation for carnivorous marine species.
- Live Bacillus subtilis culture, min. 1.0 × 10⁸ CFU/kg — a probiotic addition intended to support gut health.
- Sinking pellet, approximately 1.3–1.6 mm — reaches mid-water and bottom-oriented carnivores as well as surface feeders.
- High ascorbic acid level, min. 3,100 mg/kg — a stabilised vitamin C source well above a typical flake food.
- Colour and immune actives — astaxanthin, marigold extract and taurine included in the formulation.

Feeding directions
Feed two to three times daily, no more than fish will consume within about a minute. Hikari recommends exclusive use of the Saki-Hikari line for best results, and suggests supplementing with frozen foods rich in freshwater periodically. Remove any uneaten pellets after each feed.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for: marine carnivorous fish of all kinds, as the primary diet.
- Not suitable for: marine herbivores and grazing species, which need the plant-forward Saki-Hikari Marine Herbivore formula instead — feeding a carnivore diet exclusively to a herbivorous fish is not a balanced substitute.
Goes well with
- Saki-Hikari Marine Herbivore, for reef tanks that mix carnivorous and herbivorous species and need both diets on hand.
- A quality frozen marine food, to rotate in as Hikari suggests for dietary variety.
- A feeding ring, to keep pellets contained in high-flow reef tanks until fish find them.
Warranty and delivery
Sold with the manufacturer's standard shelf life when stored in a cool, dry place with the bag sealed between feeds, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard parcel delivery Australia-wide; no cold-chain requirement.
Common questions
What does the Bacillus subtilis actually do?
It's a live probiotic culture included at a guaranteed minimum level, intended to support the fish's digestive process; Hikari's stated aim across the Saki-Hikari line is better nutrient uptake rather than a specific therapeutic claim.
Can I mix this with other Hikari foods?
You can, though Hikari's own guidance is that exclusive use of the Saki-Hikari line gets the best results, with frozen food used as an occasional supplement rather than a daily replacement.
Is this suitable for freshwater carnivores?
It's formulated specifically for marine carnivorous fish; Hikari sells separate Saki-Hikari lines for freshwater species, so check the freshwater range for tank-bred cichlids and similar fish.
Why is the pellet so small?
At roughly 1.3–1.6 mm it's sized to suit a broad range of marine carnivore mouth sizes and to sink at a manageable rate through reef tank flow.
