Hikari Staple S - 500g
A daily staple pellet for koi and pond fish, sized small for mixed-age ponds. Hikari Staple is a floating pond diet formulated to support steady growth and colour across the feeding season, and this pack carries the small pellet, sized for smaller koi, goldfish and mixed-size pond communities.
Key features
- Small pellet, approx. 3.5–4.0 mm — sized for smaller koi, pond goldfish and mixed-size ponds where larger pellets are too big for some fish.
- 34% minimum crude protein — a balanced maintenance-level diet for year-round pond feeding, rather than a high-protein growth formula.
- Includes krill meal and seaweed meal — supports natural colour and general conditioning.
- Formulated for outdoor conditions — feeding rate is set by water temperature rather than a fixed daily amount.

Feeding directions
Feed by water temperature rather than the clock. When the pond is consistently above 15°C (60°F), feed once or twice daily. When it is consistently above 21°C (70°F), feed two to four times daily. Avoid leaving uneaten pellets in the water beyond three to five minutes, and reduce or stop feeding as the water cools going into winter.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for: koi and pond goldfish, and general outdoor pond communities.
Not suitable for: tropical aquarium fish, which need a higher-protein tropical diet, and ponds that regularly drop below 15°C for extended periods, where feeding should be reduced rather than continued at this rate.
Storage
Keep the bag sealed and stored in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Reseal after each use.
Warranty and delivery
This product carries the consumer guarantees available under Australian Consumer Law. It ships as a standard parcel item — no special freight handling applies.
Common questions
Why does feeding rate depend on temperature rather than a fixed amount?
Koi and pond fish are cold-blooded, so their metabolism and appetite track water temperature closely. Feeding a fixed daily ration through a cold snap leads to uneaten food fouling the pond.
Should I feed through winter?
Reduce feeding as the water cools and stop once it holds consistently below the point where fish are actively feeding; an overfed pond in cold water is a common cause of poor winter water quality.
Will small pellets suit my full-grown koi as well as my smaller fish?
Yes — larger koi will happily eat the small pellet, it just takes more of them per feed than a medium or large pellet would.
Does this pellet affect water clarity?
Feeding an amount fish clear within a few minutes, and removing anything left over, keeps pond water clear. Overfeeding any pellet food will cloud a pond over time.
Goes well with
Hikari Staple in Medium or Large pellet for mixed-size ponds, and a pond net or skimmer to catch any uneaten pellets before they break down.
