Zoo Med Betta Cleaning Kit

The four tools a small betta tank actually needs, in one card. The Zoo Med Betta Cleaning Kit is a four-piece maintenance set sized for betta bowls and nano tanks — a fish net, a plant fork, an algae sponge and a microfibre cloth. Aquarium tools are usually sold for tanks measured in hundreds of litres, and a 40 cm gravel vacuum is useless in a 5 L betta tank. This set is scaled down to match.

What's included
  • Fish net — scoops out large debris, and temporarily holds your betta if you are stripping the tank down
  • Plant fork — for planting live or artificial plants and repositioning decor without putting your hand through the whole tank
  • Algae sponge — lifts algae and grime off glass and other smooth surfaces
  • Microfibre cloth — for the outside of the tank: water spots, dust and fingerprints
Not included

This is a tool set, not a water care kit. It does not contain any of the following, and you will need them separately:

  • Water conditioner — essential if you are on town water, because chlorine and chloramine have to be neutralised before the water goes near a betta. See the API Betta Water Conditioner.
  • Gravel vacuum or siphon — the net removes visible debris, but it will not pull waste out of substrate
  • Bucket — use one kept only for the tank, never one that has held detergent
  • Replacement sponges — the algae sponge is not sold separately, so treat it as a wearing part

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for:

  • Betta bowls, nano tanks and small freshwater setups
  • Keepers who currently use kitchen sponges or paper towel, which shed and can carry detergent residue
  • A first tank, where none of these tools are on hand yet

Not suitable for:

  • Large aquariums — the tools are scaled for small volumes and the sponge will not cover much glass
  • Acrylic tanks — use a pad rated acrylic-safe, because an algae sponge can leave fine scratches on acrylic
  • Substrate cleaning — you need a siphon for that
  • Doing the job on its own — without a water conditioner you have tools but no safe water
Care and maintenance

Rinse all four tools in plain tank water after use and let them dry fully. Never wash them with detergent or soap, because residue carried back into a small tank is concentrated enough to harm a betta. Keep the set for aquarium use only, and replace the sponge when it stops gripping algae.

Common questions

Does the Zoo Med Betta Cleaning Kit include water conditioner?

No. The kit contains four items only — a fish net, a plant fork, an algae sponge and a microfibre cloth. Zoo Med lists no water treatment with item BP-41. You will need a conditioner separately if your tap water is chlorinated.

Can I use the algae sponge on an acrylic tank?

We would not. An algae sponge is designed for glass, and acrylic scratches far more easily. On acrylic, use a pad specifically marked acrylic-safe instead.

Is this enough to clean a betta tank properly?

For the physical side, largely yes in a small tank: the sponge handles the glass, the net lifts debris and the cloth deals with the outside. What it does not cover is the water itself — partial water changes with dechlorinated water are what actually keep a betta healthy, and that needs a conditioner and a bucket.

Will the net hold an adult betta safely?

It is sized for betta-scale fish, so yes for brief transfers. Keep any netting short, move the fish under water where you can, and use a cup for longer moves — bettas have long fins that catch in mesh.

Can I use these tools in more than one tank?

Better not to. Moving damp tools between tanks is a straightforward way to move disease and pest snails with them. If you keep several tanks, keep a set per tank or dry the tools fully in between.
