Zoo Med Betta Floating Lounge

Stays at the right depth even as the water level drops. The Zoo Med Betta Floating Lounge is a free-floating resting platform with a naturalistic bamboo-style design. Because it floats rather than clamps, Zoo Med's claim is that it always sits an appropriate distance from the surface of the water – no re-setting after a top-up, no suction cup to seal. It is Zoo Med item BL-40, and Zoo Med lists enrichment as part of what it is for.

There is no mounting surface involved, which makes this the resting option that works in a round bowl, a curved vase or any tank where a suction cup has nothing flat to grip.

Key features
  • Floats free, so depth looks after itself – evaporation, a water change and a top-up all move the surface. A floating platform moves with it; a fixed one does not.
  • No mounting surface required – works in round bowls, curved vases and textured glass, all of which defeat a suction cup.
  • Naturalistic bamboo styling – Zoo Med designs it to read as habitat rather than as an accessory, so it disappears into a planted betta setup.
  • Enrichment as well as rest – Zoo Med lists enrichment value alongside the resting function. Surface structure is something a betta interacts with, not just lies on.
  • Sits where the air is – bettas are obligate air-breathers via the labyrinth organ, and a floating platform is by definition at the surface they need.
  • Nothing to fit, power or replace – drop it in and it works.

Why bettas rest near the surface

Zoo Med sets out the reasoning on their own product page, and it is worth repeating because it changes how you furnish a betta tank.

Wild bettas live in shallow bodies of water with abundant vegetation – marshes, floodplains and rice paddies. Water like that is warm, still and low in dissolved oxygen.

The adaptation to that is the labyrinth organ, which lets a betta gulp atmospheric air at the surface rather than rely on its gills alone. A betta is not visiting the surface out of curiosity; it is breathing.

So a betta held in a tall tank with nothing to rest on near the top is doing constant work. It either holds position mid-water or settles on the substrate and swims the full height every time it needs air. Surface structure removes that.

Which betta resting spot do I need?

Zoo Med makes two resting products for bettas and they solve the same problem differently. The deciding factor is whether your water level stays put.

Product How it sits Depth below surface Follows the water level Zoo Med item
Betta Bed Leaf Hammock Suction cup, fixed to the glass Whatever height you set No – you re-set it BL-20
Betta Floating Lounge Floats freely Same distance from the surface at all times Yes, automatically BL-40

Choose the Floating Lounge when the water level moves, when there is no flat glass to mount to, or when you would rather not think about it again. Brisbane summers evaporate an open bowl faster than most people expect.

Choose the hammock when placement matters more than convenience – a specific corner, behind a plant, deliberately out of the filter's outflow. A floating platform ends up wherever the current puts it, and you do not get a say.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for

  • Round bowls, curved vases and any container with no flat glass for a suction cup
  • Open-topped tanks that lose water to evaporation between top-ups
  • Tall tanks where a betta would otherwise sit on the substrate
  • Planted or naturalistic betta setups, where the bamboo styling suits the look
  • Keepers who want a fit-and-forget option

Not suitable for

  • Tanks with a tight-fitting lid that leaves no clearance at the surface
  • Setups with strong surface flow, where it will drift into a corner and stay there
  • Very small bowls where the surface area it occupies is a meaningful share of the total
  • Anyone who needs the resting spot to stay in one specific place – use the fixed hammock instead
  • Marine or brackish tanks. This is a freshwater betta product.
What Zoo Med does not publish

Zoo Med publishes the item number, the floating design, the bamboo styling and the enrichment claim for the Betta Floating Lounge. It does not publish the dimensions, the material, or how much surface area the unit occupies.

We will not estimate any of them. In particular we are not going to state a material – "naturalistic bamboo design" describes the appearance Zoo Med has given it, and reading that as a construction material would be us guessing on your behalf.

If footprint matters because your tank is small, ask us and we will measure one from stock before you order.

Care and maintenance

Lift it out and rinse it when you do a water change. Anything that floats at the surface collects the oily film and dust that gathers there.

Rinse in tank water or plain tap water only. No detergent, ever.

Check where it has drifted to after each clean. If the filter outflow has parked it permanently in one corner, angle the flow away rather than accept it.

There is no consumable and no service interval. Zoo Med publishes no replacement period for this item.

Common questions

How does the Betta Floating Lounge stay at the right depth?

It floats rather than fixing to the glass, so it rides on the surface and keeps the same relationship to it however the water level changes. Zoo Med's stated point is that the resting site will always be an appropriate distance from the surface. Evaporation, top-ups and water changes all move the surface, and a floating platform simply moves with it.

Is the Betta Floating Lounge made of real bamboo?

Zoo Med describes it as having a naturalistic bamboo design, which is a statement about how it looks. Zoo Med does not publish the material it is made from, so we are not going to tell you it is bamboo or tell you it is not. If that matters to you, ask us and we will check the packaging on a unit in stock.

Will it work in a round betta bowl?

Yes, and this is where it has a clear advantage. A floating platform needs no mounting surface at all, so curved bowls, vases and frosted or textured glass are all fine. A suction-cup hammock needs flat, smooth, clean glass to seal against, which a round bowl cannot offer.

Why does my betta lie on the bottom instead of using it?

Check temperature before you blame the furniture. A betta resting listlessly on the substrate is very often too cold, since they are tropical fish and an unheated bowl drops well below their comfort range on a Brisbane winter night. Once temperature is ruled out, allow time – some bettas take days or weeks to adopt a new resting spot, and a few never do.

Does it get in the way of feeding?

It occupies part of the surface, which is where floating pellets sit, so in a very small bowl it can crowd the feeding area. In a normal betta tank there is ample clear surface left. If you use an automatic feeder, position the lounge away from where the food drops so pellets are not landing on the platform instead of the water.

Can I use a floating lounge and a leaf hammock together?

You can, and in a taller tank it is a reasonable setup – the floating platform at the surface and the hammock a little deeper give the fish two options at different heights. In a small bowl, pick one. Two pieces of surface furniture in a few litres of water leaves the fish less room than it gains in comfort.
