Fluval Holding And Breeder Box 1.9L
A hang-on nursery that uses your tank's own water, no separate heater or filter needed. The Fluval Holding and Breeding Box hangs on the outside of the aquarium and circulates water from the main tank using an air pump, giving fry, injured fish or new arrivals a protected 1.9 L space without disturbing the rest of the tank. Up to three separate compartments can be set up using the included partition plates.
Key features
- 1.9 L (0.5 US gal) capacity — enough room for growing fry, not just newborns.
- Multi-chamber — three included partition plates let you divide the box into one, two or three compartments.
- Uses your existing tank water — an air pump draws conditioned water from the main aquarium, so there's no separate heater or filter to run.
- Hangs on the outside of the tank — saves display space compared with a floating or fully internal breeder box.
- Levelling adjusters — for a secure fit on tanks near the compatible frame and glass-thickness limits.
- Clear walls — for easy monitoring without lifting the cover.

Will it fit my tank?
Check your tank's rim before ordering. On a frameless (rimless) tank, the box clips onto glass between 5 mm and 10 mm thick. On a framed tank, the frame itself must be narrower than 47 mm. Outside either range, the clasps won't seat securely.
What's included
- Breeding box with cover and cover clasps
- 3 partition plates
- Levelling adjusters
- Intake tube and intake extension
- Air valve
- 12″ airline tube
- Discharge cap, strainer and O-ring
- Discharge slit plates for both thick and thin frames
Not included
An air pump is required to circulate water and is not included — Fluval specifies a pump rated at 1 L/minute or less (Item A849) with matching airline tubing (Item A1141). An oversized pump can push flow through the box too hard for fry.
Suitable for
Livebearer fry, growing out juvenile fish, isolating a fin-nipped or injured fish, and short-term acclimation or quarantine of new arrivals. Fresh and saltwater.
Care and maintenance
Turn the air pump off before lifting the cover or removing the box for cleaning. Because the box shares water with the main tank, water quality in the box tracks the display tank — it isn't a substitute for quarantine dosing or treatment, which needs separate, untreated water.
Safety
Keep young children from handling or playing with the unit while it's mounted. Overstocking a chamber can deplete oxygen faster than the air-driven flow replaces it — keep fry numbers modest per compartment, especially in the smallest of the three chambers.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Fluval's standard warranty against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law.
Common questions
Do I need a heater or filter for the box?
No — it circulates water drawn from the main aquarium, so the box shares the display tank's temperature and filtration.
Will it fit a rimless tank with 12 mm glass?
No. The frameless mounting range is 5–10 mm glass thickness — 12 mm is outside that range and the clasps won't seat securely.
How many fry can I keep in one compartment?
Fluval doesn't publish a stocking number — as a general rule, keep numbers modest and watch for fish crowding at the surface, which signals the air-driven flow isn't keeping up with oxygen demand.
