Please Note: Nick’s Aquariums does not cover any quotation, inspection, or permit fees charged for importing live fish into Western Australia. All such costs are the responsibility of the purchaser, as these fees are not associated with us.

At Nick’s Aquariums, we are committed to helping our Western Australian customers navigate the requirements for importing live fish into WA. Western Australia has some of the strictest biosecurity regulations in Australia to protect its unique aquatic ecosystems. It is the importer’s responsibility to ensure all regulatory requirements are met prior to receiving live fish from us.

Important Considerations for Importing Live Fish into WA

1. Check Whether Translocation Approval Is Required

  • Certain fish, crustaceans, and corals require translocation approval before they can be imported into WA.
  • You can check approval requirements via the DPIRD translocation system or by emailing translocation@dpird.wa.gov.au.
  • Species listed under the Federal Live Import List (Part 1) are generally permitted without additional WA translocation approval.

2. Confirm the Species Is Not Noxious

  • Noxious fish species are strictly prohibited from importation into WA.
  • Importers must check the full noxious fish list here before ordering.

3. Correct Shipment Labelling

To assist with inspections and avoid delays, all shipments must be clearly labelled with:

  • Scientific name (Genus and species)
  • Common name
  • Quantity of fish
  • Supplier details (Nick’s Aquariums)

Incorrect or incomplete labelling may result in inspection delays or rejection of the shipment.

4. Biosecurity Inspection on Arrival

  • All live fish shipments entering WA are subject to inspection on arrival.
  • Importers must contact the Quarantine WA (QWA) Scheduler on +61 8 9334 1800 to arrange an inspection.

5. Water Quality & Disease Prevention

  • Transport water must be free from snails, snail eggs, and any other prohibited organisms.

6. Importing Crustaceans & Other Aquatic Species

  • Additional restrictions apply to live crustaceans and certain aquatic organisms under the Biosecurity and Agriculture Management Act 2007 (BAMA).

How to Prepare for a Smooth Import Process

  1. Verify species approval – Use DPIRD’s online translocation tool or contact their team directly.
  2. Check for noxious species – Cross-reference with FRMR Schedule 5.
  3. Ensure correct labelling – Include all required shipment details.
  4. Book inspections early – Contact QWA prior to shipment arrival.
  5. Maintain clean transport water – Avoid the presence of restricted organisms.
