Aqua Medic EcoDrift App-Control Current Pump
App-controlled wave pumps that scale from a nano reef to a 2,000 L system. The Aqua Medic EcoDrift x.3 is a magnet-mounted, app-controlled current pump built around a ceramic bearing and a continuously adjustable drive, rather than a fixed on/off flow. Four sizes – 4.3, 8.3, 15.3 and 20.3 – cover tanks from around 300 L up to 2,000 L, each with the same control platform.
Key features
- Four sizes, one platform – 4.3, 8.3, 15.3 and 20.3 share the same app and control logic, sized by rated flow and Aqua Medic's stated tank capacity.
- Continuously adjustable output – power is variable between 30% and 100%, rather than a single fixed speed, so flow can be tuned down for smaller livestock or up for a heavy bioload.
- App-controlled wave and feed modes – program flow patterns and a feed-mode pause from your phone.
- Ceramic bearing – needs a short break-in period of several days when new, after which it settles into quiet running.
- Magnetic mount – holds through glass or acrylic up to 15 mm thick on every model in the range.
- Universal power supply – a 100–240 V / 50–60 Hz transformer feeds the 24 V pump, so it runs on Australian 240 V / 50 Hz power without a converter.
Specifications
| Model | Manufacturer-rated tank capacity | Max flow | Power draw | Height | Diameter |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4.3 | up to 300 L | 4,000 L/h | 3–10 W | ~80 mm | Ø 70 mm |
| 8.3 | up to 800 L | 8,000 L/h | 8–20 W | ~105 mm | Ø 85 mm |
| 15.3 | up to 1,500 L | 15,000 L/h | 10–35 W | ~136 mm | Ø 110 mm |
| 20.3 | up to 2,000 L | 20,000 L/h | 20–60 W | ~146 mm | Ø 110 mm |
Power supply: 24 V safety-extra-low-voltage pump, with a universal 100–240 V / 50–60 Hz transformer included. Magnetic holder rated to 15 mm glass or acrylic on every model. Minimum mounting depth 10 cm below the surface; maximum mounting depth 1 m.
Performance – adjustable range
Aqua Medic publishes a maximum flow figure per model and states that pump power is continuously adjustable between 30% and 100%. It does not publish the resulting L/h figure at each power setting, and flow doesn't necessarily scale in a straight line with power – so the table below states what's actually published: the rated maximum flow, and the controllable power band. Treat the 30% end as "well below rated maximum," not a specific L/h figure.
| Model | Rated max flow (100% power) | Controllable power range |
|---|---|---|
| 4.3 | 4,000 L/h | 30–100% |
| 8.3 | 8,000 L/h | 30–100% |
| 15.3 | 15,000 L/h | 30–100% |
| 20.3 | 20,000 L/h | 30–100% |
Which size do I need?
Aqua Medic's own tank-capacity guidance is the fastest starting point: 4.3 for roughly 300 L and under, 8.3 up to 800 L, 15.3 up to 1,500 L, and 20.3 up to 2,000 L. Because output is adjustable from 30% up, it's generally better to size to your tank's upper range and run at a lower percentage than to size to the minimum and run flat out – this leaves headroom as bioload and coral cover increase.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for reef and marine display tanks as a wave and circulation pump, magnet-mounted inside the display.
- Not suitable for tanks with glass or acrylic thicker than the 15 mm magnet rating, and not designed as a return or plumbed in-line pump – see the Aqua Medic DC Runner range for return duty.
What's included
- EcoDrift x.3 pump head and magnetic holder
- 24 V transformer (100–240 V / 50–60 Hz)
Not included
App control needs a compatible phone, the Aqua Medic app and a WiFi network for scheduling and wave-pattern programming.
Care and maintenance
Allow the stated break-in period of several days on a new ceramic bearing before judging noise levels – a fresh bearing is louder than a run-in one. Rinse the pump head periodically and check the magnet holder's outer face for coralline or algae buildup, which reduces holding strength over time.
Safety
Mains-powered via the supplied transformer, stepped down to 24 V safety extra-low voltage at the pump itself. Keep the transformer out of the water and above the aquarium's high-water line, and run it from an RCD-protected circuit, as is standard practice for aquarium equipment in Australia.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Aqua Medic's manufacturer warranty, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard freight.
Common questions
Will it hold on a 12 mm rimless tank?
Yes – every model in the x.3 range is rated to 15 mm glass or acrylic, so a 12 mm panel is within range.
Do I need to run it at 100% all the time?
No – output is continuously adjustable from 30% to 100%, so most tanks run somewhere in the middle rather than flat out; size the model to your tank's upper range and dial flow in from there.
Why does a new pump sound louder than reviews suggest?
The ceramic bearing needs a break-in period of several days when new. Noise typically settles once the bearing has run in – this is expected, not a fault.
Can it be plumbed in-line instead of magnet-mounted?
No – the EcoDrift x.3 is a magnet-mounted display pump. For in-line or plumbed circulation, see Aqua Medic's DC Runner range instead.
