Bioscape Aquarium Driftwood Piece XLarge
A showpiece branch big enough to build an entire layout around. This Bioscape XLarge driftwood piece averages 60 x 20 cm and is self-sinking, so there's no floating stage to manage – it's the pick for a 90 cm+ tank or paludarium where you want one dominant piece rather than several smaller ones competing for attention.
Key features
- Self-sinking – goes to the bottom and stays there without days of soaking or a temporary rock weight.
- XLarge scale, average 60 x 20 cm – the largest single-piece grade Bioscape sells in this range, sized to anchor a big display on its own.
- Smooth surface, mottled natural colour – textured detail without sharp edges that could snag fins.
- Every piece unique – natural grain and shape; the product photo shows the style, not the exact piece you'll receive.

Which size do I need?
| Grade | Average size | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Large | 50 x 15 cm | Centrepiece in a 60–90 cm tank, or a secondary feature in a larger display |

Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for: freshwater aquascapes, blackwater setups, and terrarium or paludarium builds – particularly large-format displays where a single piece needs real presence.
- Not suitable for: submerged use in a reef or marine display – tannin release lowers pH, which most reef livestock doesn't tolerate. Fine as a dry hardscape feature above the waterline in a paludarium or terrarium.
Care and maintenance
Rinse before adding to the tank. It's self-sinking, so weighing it down isn't normally necessary. Because of its size, plan the layout and check it clears any overflow, filter intake or heater mounting before filling – a piece this large can block flow if it's wedged in the wrong spot. Tannin release will tint the water amber; run fresh carbon in the filter for a few weeks if you'd rather keep the water clear.
Goes well with
- Moss and Anubias, both of which attach directly to driftwood rather than needing substrate
- Aquascaping wire or cotton thread, for tying epiphytic plants onto the branch structure
- Filter carbon, to manage how strong the tannin tint develops
Warranty and delivery
Natural material – shape, colour and grain vary piece to piece, and the photo is representative rather than the exact item. Given the size, expect it freighted as an oversize item rather than a standard small parcel. Any issue on arrival is covered under your consumer guarantee rights under Australian Consumer Law.
Common questions
Will this piece really sink on its own?
Yes – it's sold as self-sinking. Occasionally a piece needs a day or two, or a temporary weight, before it fully settles.
What size tank does this suit?
At an average 60 x 20 cm, it's built to be the sole centrepiece in a 90 cm or larger tank, rather than one of several smaller pieces.
Will I receive the exact piece in the photo?
No – every piece is a unique natural shape and colour. The photo shows the style and scale of piece you'll receive, not the individual item.
How is this different from the Large piece?
The Large piece averages 50 x 15 cm; this XLarge piece averages 60 x 20 cm – noticeably longer and thicker, and sized to work as a standalone centrepiece rather than needing a second piece alongside it.
