Dragon Rock
One hand-picked piece of dragon stone, sold individually. Bioscape Dragon Rock is a natural, deeply pitted ohko-style stone in warm brown and red-brown tones, sold here as a single piece rather than by the kilo or the box – useful for topping up an existing layout, adding a focal point, or picking one specific shape rather than committing to a full box.
Key features
- Deeply textured, pitted surface – the honeycomb of nooks and crevices that makes dragon stone (also sold as ohko stone) one of aquascaping's most recognisable rocks.
- Inert once washed – doesn't shed minerals into the water, so it won't push your KH, GH or pH up the way calcareous rock does.
- Crevices suit moss and fern attachment – the porous surface gives moss, anubias and ferns somewhere to root, and shrimp somewhere to shelter.
- Sold by the piece, not weight – pick this listing when you want one stone rather than a full 15 kg box.
- Each piece is unique – natural stone, so shape, weight and exact colouring vary piece to piece; the photo is representative, not the exact piece you'll receive.
Specifications
| Sold as | Material | Colour | Water type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single piece | Natural ohko-style dragon stone | Brown / red-brown, honeycomb texture | Freshwater aquascaping and terrariums |
Bioscape doesn't publish a weight or dimension figure for the individual piece – it's a natural product picked and sold by the piece, and size varies. We're not printing a figure we can't confirm.
Also sold by the box
Building a hardscape from scratch rather than topping one up? Dragon Rock is also sold as a 15 kg box of mixed pieces.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater aquascapes, planted tanks and shrimp tanks, and for terrariums and reptile or frog enclosures, where a lightweight, richly textured stone is wanted for structure or moss and fern attachment. Dragon stone is marketed and sold as a freshwater aquascaping stone – Bioscape doesn't publish marine or reef-tank guidance for it, so we're not making that claim here.
Preparation
Rinse and scrub the piece under running water until it runs clear before adding it to a tank – the crevices trap clay dust and sediment from handling and quarrying, and a jet of water through the holes clears far more than a quick dunk. The stone itself is inert and won't alter pH, but trapped organic matter left unwashed can.
Warranty and delivery
Covered against being not as described under Australian Consumer Law. As a natural product, the piece you receive will vary from the listing photo in exact shape and colour – that's expected, not a fault.
Common questions
Will this affect my water hardness?
No, not directly – dragon stone is inert and doesn't shed minerals into the water. Any pH movement usually comes from sediment or organic matter trapped in the crevices, which thorough rinsing before use largely prevents.
Is it safe for shrimp?
Yes. The porous, pitted surface gives shrimp places to shelter and graze, and the stone doesn't alter water chemistry in a way that's a concern for shrimp.
Can I use it in a marine or reef tank?
Bioscape markets dragon stone as a freshwater aquascaping stone. We haven't found manufacturer guidance for reef or marine use, so we'd suggest sticking to purpose-made reef rock for a marine system.
Will I get the exact piece shown in the photo?
No – this is a single natural piece and the photo is representative of the stone type, not a guarantee of the specific piece you'll receive.
