Fluval Biological Enhancer
A shot of live bacteria that gets biological filtration started immediately, instead of waiting weeks for it to build on its own. Fluval Biological Enhancer (sold as Cycle in some regions) seeds the water with beneficial bacteria the moment it's added, giving new tanks, water changes and filter media swaps a head start on breaking down fish waste. It's available in 30 mL, 120 mL, 250 mL and 2 L sizes.
Why you need one
New aquariums and new filters start with no established bacterial colony, so ammonia and nitrite can build up before biological filtration catches up – the classic new-tank spike. Dosing bacteria directly shortens that gap, and topping up after every water change or filter media rinse replaces bacteria lost in the process.
Key features
- Live bacteria on contact – starts working as soon as it hits the water, rather than needing time to multiply from a small starter culture.
- Use at setup, water changes and filter cleans – Fluval recommends dosing at each of these points, not just once.
- Can't be overdosed – Fluval states there's no risk in dosing more than the minimum, useful if you're not measuring precisely.
- 2 L pump bottle – 5 mL per pump, for fish rooms or larger systems dosing frequently.

Dosage and directions
Dose weekly for ongoing conditions, and at every water change and filter media change – Fluval's guidance is to dose for at least the volume of water changed, with no stated upper limit since the product can't be overdosed. Fluval doesn't publish a fixed millilitre-per-litre ratio, so there's no cost-per-litre figure to calculate for this product. The 2 L bottle's pump dispenses 5 mL per press.
Fluval doesn't publish the specific bacterial strains or a detailed ingredient breakdown for this product.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater and saltwater aquariums, at setup and as ongoing maintenance. Not a substitute for an established filter running mature media – it supports the process, but a tank still needs time with stable biological filtration behind it before a full stocking level is safe.
Goes well with
Fluval Biological Aquarium Cleaner – the two are commonly dosed together, with the Enhancer helping manage any ammonia rise as the Cleaner speeds up waste breakdown.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by Fluval's standard consumer guarantee against manufacturing defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard freight class.
Common questions
Is this the same as Fluval Cycle?
Yes – Fluval markets this product as Cycle Biological Enhancer in some regions. It's the same formulation.
Do I still need to cycle a new tank if I use this?
It shortens the process, but Fluval's own guidance still points to testing ammonia and nitrite before adding a full stocking level, rather than assuming the tank is instantly cycled.
Can I dose it straight into the filter instead of the tank?
Fluval's directions describe dosing into the aquarium water. If you want it to reach filter media directly, add it after a media rinse when the filter is next opened.
