Fluval Zeo Carb
A carbon-and-zeolite blend that clears water impurities while pulling toxic ammonia out at the same time. Fluval Zeo Carb combines Fluval's activated carbon, which removes dissolved impurities, odours and discolouration, with Fluval Ammonia Remover, a zeolite media that binds ammonia. It's for freshwater use only. It's designed to sit loose or bagged in the media basket of a Fluval external canister filter; Fluval doesn't publish a specific model-by-model fit list for this media, so check that your filter has a chemical media stage or basket before buying, and use a mesh media bag if your basket doesn't hold loose media.
Key features
- Two media in one – activated carbon plus a zeolite ammonia remover
- Clears odour, discolouration and dissolved impurities
- Binds ammonia from the water column
- Three pack sizes – 450 g (3 x 150 g bags), 1200 g and 2100 g – to match your filter size and number of tanks
Specifications by pack size
| Pack size | SKU | Format | Fits | Replacement interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 450 g | FA63 | 3 x 150 g nylon bags | Fluval canister filters 103/104/105, 203/204/205, 303/304/305, 403/404/405 (mid or lower media basket) and FX5 (top or middle media basket) | Replace monthly as a general guide, more often in heavily stocked tanks |
| 1200 g | FA64 | Single bulk-fill container | Same filter range as the 450 g pack | Replace monthly as a general guide, more often in heavily stocked tanks |
| 2100 g | FA67 | Single bulk-fill container | Same filter range as the 450 g pack | Replace monthly as a general guide, more often in heavily stocked tanks |
Fluval doesn't publish a different tank-litre or filter-model rating for each pack size – all three sizes share the same filter compatibility and replacement guidance above. The larger packs simply hold more media, for bigger filters, multiple baskets, or topping up between full changes.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for freshwater aquarium canister and external filters with a chemical media stage
- Not for saltwater or reef aquariums
- Not rechargeable or rinseable – Fluval doesn't recommend attempting to recharge spent media; treat each bag as single-use
Safety
Carbon-based media will strip most fish medications out of the water. Remove it from the filter before dosing any treatment, and don't put it back in until the course is finished.
Care and maintenance
Both the carbon and the zeolite exhaust with use and aren't rechargeable, so replace with a fresh bag rather than rinsing and reusing. Fluval doesn't publish an official replacement interval; many aquarists replace monthly as a rule of thumb, but that's general hobbyist practice rather than a Fluval-stated figure – go by your own bioload and water quality readings if you want to fine-tune it.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships as a standard parcel.
Common questions
Can I rinse and reuse the media?
No – Fluval doesn't recommend recharging Zeo Carb. Once it's exhausted, replace it.
Will it remove my fish medication?
Yes – like any carbon-based media, it will strip most medications from the water. Remove it before treating fish, and don't reintroduce it until the course is complete.
Is this safe for a reef or marine tank?
No – Fluval markets Zeo Carb for freshwater use only.
How often do I need to replace it?
Fluval doesn't publish a fixed interval. Replace it once it's exhausted rather than waiting for visible water quality problems – monthly is a common starting point among aquarists, adjusted for your tank's bioload.
