Seachem Discus Trace
Trace elements matter for discus colour and condition. Discus Trace is a sodium-free trace element supplement from Seachem, formulated to replenish the broad range of trace elements that fish draw from both food and their environment. These elements are naturally depleted over time through utilisation, oxidation and precipitation, so regular dosing helps maintain the conditions discus and other soft-water fish need to thrive. It is suited to discus tanks and planted discus tanks alike.
Key features
- Broad-spectrum trace elements – replenishes trace elements demonstrated to be necessary for proper fish health and growth.
- Sodium-free formula – contains no added sodium, making it suitable for discus and other soft-water species that are sensitive to salt.
- Does not disturb water chemistry – contains no buffering agents or acids, so it will not alter pH or KH, and does not carry enough mineral concentration to affect GH under ordinary use.
- Simple twice-weekly dosing – one capful (5 mL) per 80 L, added directly to the aquarium.
- Compatible with other Seachem freshwater products – can be used alongside products such as Flourish, Flourish Trace, Fresh Trace, Cichlid Trace and Gold Trace.
- Freshwater formulation – developed specifically for freshwater aquariums and the needs of cichlids such as discus.

Dosage and directions
| Water volume | Dose | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| 80 L (20 US gallons) | 1 capful (5 mL) | Twice weekly |
Scale the dose in proportion to your aquarium volume and add directly to the tank. Seachem recommends pairing dosing with water changes of around 30 percent of tank volume or less, so livestock are not exposed to sudden shifts in water parameters.
Suitable for / not suitable for
Generally safe for: freshwater community fish, freshwater sharks, loaches, catfish, aquatic frogs and live plants.
Use with caution (start with a reduced dose and build up gradually): scale-less fish, rays, eels, shrimp and snails. Discus Trace contains copper sulphate as one of its trace element sources; Seachem notes the copper concentration is low enough that a significant overdose, well beyond the recommended rate, would be needed to stress shrimp or snails, but caution is still advised for these more sensitive species.
Not suitable for: saltwater or reef aquariums, corals, clams and other exotic marine invertebrates.
Planted tanks: compatible with planted aquariums, including those also treated with other Seachem trace or fertiliser products. If a tank is already dosed regularly with a dedicated plant trace supplement such as Flourish Trace, additional Discus Trace is typically unnecessary, as fish trace-element needs are usually met by the plant dosing as well.
Care and maintenance
- Dose 1 capful (5 mL) per 80 L of aquarium water, twice weekly, adding it directly to the tank.
- Pair dosing with a regular water-change routine, keeping changes to around 30 percent of tank volume or less per change.
- Using more than two trace element supplements in the same aquarium is generally unnecessary – choose one product suited to your tank's needs.

Common questions
Is Seachem Discus Trace safe for shrimp and snails?
Discus Trace contains a small amount of copper sulphate as a trace element source. Seachem notes that the copper level is low enough that a significant overdose would be required to stress shrimp or snails, but these species are still rated as needing caution, so start with a reduced dose and increase gradually while monitoring your livestock.
Can I use Discus Trace in a planted tank?
Yes, it is compatible with planted aquariums. However, if you already dose a dedicated plant trace supplement such as Flourish Trace on a regular basis, adding Discus Trace as well is typically unnecessary, since the plant supplement generally provides sufficient trace elements for both plants and fish.
Will Discus Trace affect my pH, GH or KH?
No. It contains no buffering agents or acids that would alter pH or KH, and does not contain a high enough concentration of minerals to affect GH under ordinary use.
Is this product reef or marine safe?
No. Discus Trace is formulated exclusively for freshwater aquariums and the needs of cichlids such as discus. It is not suitable for saltwater or reef aquariums, corals, clams or other exotic marine invertebrates.
How often should I dose Discus Trace?
The standard directions are 1 capful (5 mL) per 80 L (20 US gallons), dosed twice a week directly into the aquarium.
Can I use Discus Trace with other Seachem products?
Yes, it can be used alongside other Seachem freshwater products, including Flourish, Flourish Trace, Fresh Trace, Cichlid Trace and Gold Trace. Using more than two trace element supplements together is generally unnecessary.
