Seachem Nitrite & Nitrate Kit 75 Tests
Two of the most important numbers in a cycling or established tank, from one kit. Seachem MultiTest Nitrite & Nitrate covers both parameters in a single 75+ test kit, reading nitrite from 0–25 mg/L (detecting below 0.1 mg/L) and nitrate from 0–50 mg/L (detecting below 0.2 mg/L), in fresh or marine water.
Why test both together
Nitrite is the acute danger – it spikes during a tank's cycling phase and after a sudden bioload increase, and it's directly toxic to fish at low concentrations. Nitrate is the chronic, slow-building number that tells you how well water changes and filtration are keeping pace with waste. Testing only one gives half the picture; this kit reads both from the same test plate.
Key features
- Over 75 tests per kit – around 39c per test at full retail price.
- Nitrite range 0–25 mg/L, detecting changes below 0.1 mg/L.
- Nitrate range 0–50 mg/L, detecting changes below 0.2 mg/L, with colour-chart steps of 0.1–1 mg/L.
- Six-cavity test plate – compare up to six samples side by side.
- Reference sample included to check the kit is reading correctly.
- Freshwater and marine – one kit for the whole store's tank types.

What's included
- Nitrite Reagent 1
- Nitrate Reagent 2
- Nitrate reference sample
- Sample pipette and spoon
- Nitrite/nitrate colour chart
- Multi-cavity test plate and instructions
Directions
Dose a water sample with the nitrite reagent and read against the nitrite side of the colour chart, then dose a separate sample with the nitrate reagent and read against the nitrate side. Run the included reference sample alongside a tank sample whenever a result looks unexpectedly high or low, to confirm the kit itself is reading correctly. Store reagents cool and out of direct light between uses.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for: new tanks being cycled, where nitrite is the number to watch daily, and established tanks tracking nitrate build-up between water changes. Works in both freshwater and marine setups.
Not suitable for: nitrate testing in heavily-stocked reef tanks running consistently near zero, where a lower-range, finer-resolution reef nitrate kit will read more precisely than this general-purpose kit's 0.1–1 mg/L steps.
Safety
Keep away from children. Handle reagents carefully and avoid skin and eye contact – rinse thoroughly with water if contact occurs.
Goes well with
- Seachem MultiTest Ammonia – the third leg of the nitrogen cycle, and essential during tank cycling alongside nitrite.
- Seachem MultiTest Phosphate – rounds out a full nutrient picture for algae control.
Warranty and delivery
Ships as a standard parcel. Store reagents cool and dark between uses. Covered by the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law in addition to Seachem's own guarantee.
Common questions
Do I need to test nitrite and nitrate separately, or does one test cover both?
They're separate readings from the same kit – dose one sample with the nitrite reagent and a second sample with the nitrate reagent, then read each against its own side of the colour chart.
Why is nitrite more urgent to watch than nitrate?
Nitrite is directly toxic to fish at low concentrations and spikes suddenly during cycling or after a bioload increase. Nitrate builds up slowly and is managed with routine water changes rather than requiring an emergency response.
Is this kit accurate enough for a low-nutrient reef tank?
It's a general-purpose kit with 0.1–1 mg/L nitrate chart steps, which is coarser than dedicated low-range reef nitrate kits. It's well suited to fresh and marine tanks generally, but a reef-specific kit will read more precisely near zero.
How many tests do I actually get?
Over 75, at around 39c per test, covering both nitrite and nitrate readings.
Can I use this kit during fishless cycling?
Yes – it's well suited to tracking the nitrite spike and the appearance of nitrate that marks a tank's nitrogen cycle progressing.
