Seachem Pristine

Living bacteria that digest the sludge ordinary filtration leaves behind. Seachem Pristine uses bio-augmentation – a blend of hardy bacteria – to break down uneaten food, fish waste, detritus and the sludge that builds up on substrate, rock and filter media, while consuming the excess nutrients that feed nuisance algae. It's sold in six sizes from 100 mL to 4 L, all dosed to the same rate.

Key features
  • Digests organic waste – sludge, detritus, uneaten food and the oily surface film that overfeeding leaves behind.
  • Keeps working in low-oxygen conditions – unlike ordinary nitrifying bacteria, the blend continues multiplying in the harsh conditions inside sludge and detritus.
  • Improves clarity – established colonies produce biopolymers that trap fine particles.
  • Different job to Seachem Stability – Stability seeds the biofilter; Pristine cleans up waste. The two are commonly used together.
  • Fresh and marine safe.

Which size do I need?

All sizes are the same formula. Cost per litre is calculated at the initial (more concentrated) dose rate, since that's the conservative figure – routine maintenance dosing at half that rate costs even less. Buying bigger brings the cost down noticeably: the 100 mL bottle works out to roughly double the per-litre cost of every other size.

Size Approx. litres treated (initial dose) Cost per litre treated
100 mL 800 L 2c per litre
250 mL 2,000 L 1c per litre
500 mL 4,000 L 1c per litre
1 L 8,000 L 1c per litre
2 L 16,000 L 1c per litre
4 L 32,000 L 1c per litre
Dosage and directions
  • Initial dose: 5 mL (1 capful) per 40 L.
  • Maintenance dose: 5 mL (1 capful) per 80 L, applied when adding livestock or after the biofilter is disrupted by cleaning or medication.
  • Shake well before use.
  • Turn off UV sterilisers and ozone before dosing, and leave them off for 2–3 days while the bacteria establish.
  • If the tank has been on antibiotics, remove them with fresh carbon and a water change before dosing.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for: freshwater and marine aquariums carrying sludge, detritus or excess nutrient load; alongside Seachem Stability during cycling or new livestock additions.
  • Not suitable for: immediate use with UV or ozone running – switch these off first. Persistent high-nutrient problems usually point to overstocking, overfeeding or inadequate filtration, which Pristine eases rather than fixes outright.

Common questions

Can I use Pristine and Seachem Stability together?

Yes – they do different jobs. Stability seeds the biofilter with nitrifying bacteria; Pristine digests existing waste and sludge.

How long does a bottle of Pristine last?

Shelf life is 4 years from the date of manufacture, and dosing is only needed when adding livestock or after the biofilter is disrupted, so a bottle typically lasts well beyond a single top-up.

Will Pristine harm my UV steriliser or ozone reactor?

No, but both should be switched off for 2–3 days after dosing so the bacteria aren't destroyed before they establish.

Does Pristine replace water changes?

No – it eases the load between water changes by digesting waste, but regular water changes are still the main way nutrients leave the system.
