Seachem Zip Bag

A zippered media bag with no strings, no ties, no spills. The Seachem Zip Bag range holds loose filter media behind a corrosion-proof zipper instead of a string tie – quick to open for media changes, secure while the filter's running. Three mesh sizes cover everything from fine chemical media to bulk Matrix.

Key features
  • Corrosion-proof zipper – opens in seconds for a media change, no strings or ties to knot.
  • Durable stitched PVC construction across all three sizes.
  • Three mesh grades – fine (25 mesh), medium (16 mesh) and coarse (8 mesh) – matched to media particle size.
  • No strings or ties to work loose in the filter.
Which size do I need?
Size Mesh Dimensions Capacity Best for
Small 25 mesh (fine) 32 x 14 cm (12.5" x 5.5") ~1 L PhosGuard, PhosBond, MatrixCarbon, SeaGel, Renew, Zeolite
Medium 16 mesh 32 x 14 cm (12.5" x 5.5") ~1 L Intermediate to larger-grain media
Large 8 mesh (coarse) 48 x 43 cm (19" x 17") ~18 L Bulk Matrix and Pond Matrix

Small and Medium share the same footprint and differ only in mesh tightness – pick Small for fine powders and small-granule resins, Medium for coarser granular media. Large is a different bag entirely, sized for bulk bio-media in sumps and large canister filters.

How to use

Fill with your chosen media, zip closed, and position in the filter so water flow through the bag is maximised. Rinse under tap water before first use. Not recommended for the finest powdered resins – the 25-mesh Small bag is coarser than Seachem's welded 180-micron "The Bag," so for the smallest resins like Purigen, The Bag is the better fit.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for granular chemical and biological media – PhosGuard, PhosBond, MatrixCarbon, SeaGel, Renew, Zeolite, Matrix and Pond Matrix. Not suitable for the finest resin powders, which need the 180-micron mesh of Seachem's The Bag instead.

Care and maintenance

The zipper and stitched PVC construction are reusable across many media changes; rinse the bag out when you replace the media inside it.

Goes well with

Seachem MatrixCarbon, PhosGuard or Matrix bio-media, and Seachem's The Bag for anyone also running a fine-grain resin like Purigen.

Warranty and delivery

Covered by Seachem's standard quality guarantee in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard freight; the Large size ships in a bigger box due to its size.

Common questions

What's the difference between Small and Medium?

Same 32 x 14 cm footprint, different mesh: Small is 25 mesh for fine media, Medium is 16 mesh for coarser granules. Match the mesh to your media's particle size.

Will the Large bag fit a hang-on filter?

Unlikely – at 48 x 43 cm it's sized for sump baskets and large canister media chambers, not compact hang-on filters.

Can I use this for Purigen?

Not ideally. Purigen's fine granules are better contained by the 180-micron mesh of Seachem's The Bag; the Zip Bag range is coarser.

Is the zipper safe long-term in saltwater?

Yes, it's built to be corrosion-proof for ongoing use in both freshwater and saltwater systems.
