Bioscape Spider Wood Large 40-50cm
Fine, twisting root wood sized for standard to larger scapes. Bioscape Spider Wood Large is slender, branching root wood in the 40-50 cm grade, sized to build tree and root-tangle structures in tanks that need presence without going to full XLarge scale. Available as a single feature branch or as a box of pieces for a fuller layout.
Key features
- 40-50 cm grade – the second-largest size in Bioscape's Spider Wood range, between Medium (30-40 cm) and XLarge (50-60 cm).
- Single piece or box – buy one branch as a feature piece, or the box (approximately 6 pieces) for a fuller scape or multiple tanks.
- Slender, twisting branches – fine root-and-branch shapes that build convincing tree and root-tangle structures rather than bulky driftwood chunks.
- Lower tannin release – Bioscape's Spider Wood releases noticeably less tannin than Mopani or Malaysian driftwood, so water tinting is milder.
- Every piece unique – as a natural product, exact shape and colour vary piece to piece; the listing photo is a representative sample.

Which size do I need?
| Grade | Length | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Small | 20-30 cm | Nano and shrimp tanks, or a fine accent branch in a larger scape |
| Medium | 30-40 cm | Nano to mid-size layouts wanting a real structural feature |
| Large | 40-50 cm | Standard to larger tanks wanting a fuller tree structure |
Bioscape grades Spider Wood by branch length. Large, this listing, suits a standard to larger tank wanting the branching to read as a dominant feature rather than an accent. For a smaller footprint, see Spider Wood Small or Spider Wood Medium. Move up a grade if you want the branching to read as even more dominant.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for freshwater aquascaping in standard to larger tanks, and also used in reptile enclosures and terrarium or paludarium builds. Bioscape doesn't publish a marine-safe claim for Spider Wood, so treat it as a freshwater and terrarium product rather than a reef-safe one.
Care and maintenance
New Spider Wood is dried for shipping and floats. Larger pieces generally take longer to waterlog than Small or Medium – weighting it down for a week or more is typical, and denser pieces can take longer still. Presoaking or boiling speeds up sinking and helps reduce tannin release. A harmless white biofilm sometimes forms on new wood underwater; it isn't dangerous and is often grazed off by shrimp, snails and some fish.
What's included
The single piece option is exactly one Large, 40-50 cm Spider Wood branch. The box option is the same grade sold as a natural-product pack of approximately 6 pieces; because it's sold by size grade rather than a fixed count, the exact number of pieces in a box varies between deliveries – check with us before ordering if you need a guaranteed count for a planned layout.
Warranty and delivery
Covered against manufacturing and packing defects under Bioscape's warranty, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law.
Common questions
What's the difference between the single piece and the box?
The single piece option is one hand-picked Large branch, good for topping up a layout or as a standalone feature. The box is the same 40-50 cm grade sold as a natural-product pack of around 6 pieces, better suited to building a fuller scape or stocking multiple tanks.
Will it turn my water brown?
Some tannin release is normal with any natural wood, but Bioscape's Spider Wood releases noticeably less than Mopani or Malaysian driftwood. Presoaking or boiling reduces it further.
Does it float?
Yes, initially. New wood is dried for shipping and needs weighting down – most pieces waterlog and sink within about a week, though larger or denser pieces can take longer.
Is it safe for shrimp?
Yes. Spider Wood is considered safe for shrimp, plecos and other tank inhabitants, and the biofilm that sometimes forms on new wood is a food source rather than a hazard.
Is there a bigger size?
Yes, as a box: Bioscape's 50-60 cm XLarge grade. As a single piece, this 40-50 cm Large size is the largest offered individually.
