Zoo Med Hermit Crab Salt Water Conditioner
Makes the salt water half of the two-bowl rule safe to use. Land hermit crabs need constant access to both fresh water and marine-style salt water to regulate their internal salt balance and support healthy gill function and moulting. Zoo Med Hermit Crab Salt Water Conditioner turns ordinary tap water into safe, dechlorinated salt water in one step, so a salt water dish can sit alongside the fresh water dish at all times.
Key features
- One-step salt water – mixes natural sea salt into tap water and removes chlorine and chloramine at the same time.
- Supports osmoregulation – helps crabs maintain the internal salt balance they need for healthy gill function.
- Supports moulting – regular access to properly conditioned salt water is part of a healthy moult cycle.
- Small, precise dose – one teaspoon treats a cup of water, so it's easy to mix exactly as much as a day's water change needs.
- About $4.32 per litre of mixed salt water – a 64 mL bottle treats roughly 3 litres at Zoo Med's stated dose.

Dosage and directions
Add 1 teaspoon (about 5 mL) per 250 mL (1 cup) of water, scaling up for the size of the dish you're filling. Mix fresh before each water change rather than pre-mixing large batches for storage.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for making the salt water dish in a land hermit crab habitat. Not a substitute for the fresh water dish – crabs need both fresh and properly conditioned salt water available at the same time, not one instead of the other. Not intended for marine aquariums; it isn't formulated or tested as a reef or fish-safe salt mix.
Safety
For habitat use only, not for human consumption. Keep out of reach of children. Follow the stated dose – adding more than directed doesn't make the water better for your crabs, it changes the salinity they're adapting to.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by the standard Zoo Med manufacturer warranty against defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard parcel delivery.
Common questions
Do I really need a separate salt water dish?
Yes. Land hermit crabs use salt water to regulate their internal salt balance and support gill function – fresh water on its own isn't enough.
Can I use aquarium marine salt instead?
Zoo Med's conditioner is formulated and dosed specifically for hermit crab dishes; it isn't the same product as a reef aquarium salt mix and the doses aren't interchangeable.
How much salt water does one bottle make?
At Zoo Med's stated dose of one teaspoon per 250 mL, a 64 mL bottle treats roughly 3 litres of water – enough for many dish refills in a typical crabitat.
Do I need to pre-mix and store salt water?
No – mix only what you need for that water change rather than mixing and storing a bulk batch.
