AMS BIO CULTURE BALLS 2KG
A ready-made home for the bacteria that keep your water clean. AMS Bio Culture Balls are inert nano-ceramic biological filter media, sold as a 2 kg pack with a mesh media bag included. Their high surface area gives nitrifying bacteria plenty of room to colonise, so ammonia and nitrite get processed as fast as your fish and corals produce it. They're rated for both freshwater and marine aquariums and sit in a filter or sump wherever water flows through them.
Key features
- Inert nano-ceramic material — won't leach into the water or shift pH, so it's safe to leave running indefinitely.
- High surface area — gives nitrifying bacteria more room to colonise than gravel or sponge media alone.
- 2 kg pack with mesh bag included — ready to drop straight into a filter basket or sump chamber.
- Fresh and saltwater rated — one product covers both types of system.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for community and planted freshwater tanks, marine and reef systems, and any sump or canister filter with flow passing through the media chamber.
Not suitable as a stand-alone filter in a dead spot with no flow across it — the bacteria need water movement to work — and it isn't a substitute for mechanical filtration in a heavily stocked tank.
What's included
- 2 kg of AMS Bio Culture Balls
- One mesh media bag
Care and maintenance
Rinse in tank water only, never tap water, when the media clogs with detritus. Chlorine and chloramine in tap water will strip the bacterial film you've built up. The ceramic itself doesn't wear out, so there's no scheduled replacement — just top up or replace individual balls if any crack.
Goes well with
- Bioscape Carbon Extraction Pad — mechanical and chemical polishing alongside biological media.
- Seachem Prime — conditions new tap water and detoxifies ammonia while the bacteria colony establishes.
- API Freshwater Master Multi Test Kit 5 in 1 — tracks ammonia and nitrite while the media cycles in.
Warranty and delivery
This is a passive filter media rather than a mechanical part, so there's no separate manufacturer warranty term published — your purchase is still covered by the consumer guarantees under Australian Consumer Law. Ships standard parcel freight.
Common questions
How long do AMS Bio Culture Balls last?
Indefinitely, as long as the ceramic beads themselves aren't cracked or broken. Give the media a rinse in tank water if flow through the bag slows down.
Can I use these in a marine tank?
Yes. AMS Bio Culture Balls are rated for both freshwater and marine aquariums.
Do I need to cycle a new colony before adding fish?
Yes. Like any biological media, it needs to be colonised by nitrifying bacteria first. Seeding it with mature media or water from an established tank speeds this up — monitor ammonia and nitrite with a test kit until both read zero before stocking.
Will these affect my water chemistry?
No. The ceramic is inert, so it won't alter pH, hardness or salinity.
