API Tropical Greens Flakes
A vegetable-forward flake for algae and plant-eating fish. API Tropical Greens Flakes are a fish-meal-based flake from Mars Fishcare with a higher proportion of spirulina and seaweed, formulated for herbivorous and omnivorous tropical community fish that want more plant matter in their diet than a standard flake provides.
Key features
- 33% minimum crude protein with more fat and less fibre than API's standard Tropical Flakes – see the comparison below.
- Spirulina and dried seaweed meal for herbivorous and algae-grazing fish.
- Vitamin E and vitamin C fortified – 680 IU/lb and 363 mg/lb minimum respectively.

Feeding directions
Feed twice a day, only as much as fish will consume within a few minutes. Flakes float initially then gradually break down and settle – remove uneaten food to keep water quality up.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for:
- Herbivorous and omnivorous tropical community fish – mollies, plecos, algae-grazing species and similar
- Freshwater aquariums
- Rotating alongside a protein-forward flake for a varied diet
Not suitable for:
- Strict carnivores needing a higher-protein diet – see API Tropical Flakes instead
- As a sole diet for fish with known fish-protein or wheat sensitivities
Goes well with
- API Tropical Flakes – rotate in for a higher-protein option for the rest of the tank.
- API Tropical Pellet Food – a sinking option for mid- and bottom-feeding fish.
- API Vacation Fish Feeder Block – cover feeding while you're away.

Common questions
How often should I feed this?
Twice a day, offering only what your fish will finish in a few minutes – uneaten flake breaks down and affects water quality.
What's the difference between this and API Tropical Flakes?
Both share the same fish-meal base and ingredient order, but Greens carries proportionally more spirulina and seaweed, and analyses at 33% protein / 6% fat / 3.7% fibre against 35% / 5% / 4% for the standard Tropical Flakes – slightly lower protein, slightly more fat and fibre.
Can I feed this to carnivorous fish?
It won't harm them, but a protein-forward food such as API Tropical Flakes suits carnivores and heavy feeders better as a primary diet.
Which size should I buy?
Buy the smaller size only if this is a rotation food rather than a daily staple.
