Aqua Medic Ocean Clear - Fleece Roll Filter
Advancing fleece keeps mechanical filtration fresh without hands-on cleaning. The Aqua Medic Ocean Clear is a motorised fleece roll filter for saltwater and freshwater aquariums up to 850 litres. A float switch advances a fresh section of 100 mm polypropylene fleece automatically as the current roll clogs, so mechanical filtration stays effective without a manual clean-out. It suits sumps fed by gravity overflow and drops straight in without hard plumbing.
Key features
- Auto-advancing fleece — a float switch triggers the motor to feed fresh fleece through as the roll loads up, so filtration doesn't quietly stop working between water changes.
- Box-in-a-box design — the inner box lifts out as one piece for a roll change, rather than threading fleece through fixed rollers.
- No hard plumbing required — the drain line simply hangs over the inlet, so it can be added to an existing sump without re-plumbing the overflow.
- Dual-voltage transformer — runs from 100–240 V AC, so it operates on Australian 240 V / 50 Hz supply without a converter.
- Optional pressurised feed — remove the rubber inlet grommet and it accepts a pumped feed from an Aqua Medic DC Runner 800 or 1000 (pump sold separately) for tanks without a gravity overflow.
- Rated to 850 L — sized for aquariums up to 850 litres of saltwater or freshwater.

Aqua Medic doesn't publish a flow rate or turnover figure for this unit, so we haven't put a number on the page — it's sized by tank volume rather than a flow-through rating.
What's included / What you'll still need
- Included: Ocean Clear filter unit, one 40 m fleece roll pre-loaded, mains transformer.
- You'll still need: a DC Runner 800 or 1000 pump only if you're not running a gravity overflow feed. Additional fleece rolls (sold separately as the Aqua Medic Ocean Clear Fleece Roll) once the first roll runs out.
How it works
Water overflows by gravity into the top of the unit and passes through the current section of fleece. A float switch detects when the fleece loads up with detritus and clogs, and the motor advances a fresh section from the roll automatically. When the roll needs replacing, the inner box lifts out as a single unit for a clean roll change.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for: sumps with a gravity overflow up to 850 L, marine and freshwater systems wanting mechanical polishing ahead of a skimmer or biological media.
- Not suitable for: display tanks without a sump or gravity feed point, unless run with the optional pump. Systems over 850 L should step up to a larger roller filter or run two units.
Care and maintenance
Fit a new fleece roll when the current one runs out — the Aqua Medic Ocean Clear Fleece Roll is the matching replacement. Check the float switch and inlet grommet periodically to make sure the advance mechanism is triggering properly.
Safety
Mains powered — keep the transformer clear of water splash and install with a drip loop on the power cable. Position the unit so the used-fleece exit doesn't obstruct water flow back to the sump.
Goes well with
- Aqua Medic Ocean Clear Fleece Roll — the matching replacement media.
- Aqua Medic DC Runner 800 or 1000 — for pressurised, non-gravity installs.
- A protein skimmer downstream — mechanical polishing ahead of skimming improves skimmer performance.

Common questions
Does the Ocean Clear need to be plumbed in?
No — for a standard sump setup the drain simply overflows into the inlet by gravity, with no hard plumbing required. It can also accept a pumped feed if the rubber grommet is removed and a DC Runner 800 or 1000 is connected, sold separately.
How often does the fleece need replacing?
The unit auto-advances fresh fleece as the roll clogs, so a full 40 m roll lasts through many advance cycles before it needs replacing outright. How long depends on bioload and any pre-filtration upstream, so check the roll level periodically rather than on a fixed schedule.
What size aquarium does it suit?
Aqua Medic rates the Ocean Clear for saltwater and freshwater systems up to 850 litres.
Does it run on Australian power?
Yes. The transformer accepts 100–240 V AC at 50–60 Hz, which covers Australia's 240 V / 50 Hz mains without a converter.
Is a pump included?
No. The unit is gravity-fed by default. A DC Runner 800 or 1000 is only needed if you want to feed it under pressure instead, and is sold separately.
