A shelter fish and shrimp will actually use. The Bioscape Hide Cave L is a tube-shaped aquarium hide, 8–12cm in diameter and 20–30cm long, sized for plecos, cichlids and other cave-dwelling fish that want a snug, defensible space rather than open water.

Key features
  • 8–12cm diameter, 20–30cm length — a genuine tunnel a mid-to-large cave-dweller can retreat into, not a shallow ornament.
  • Open at both ends — gives a territorial fish an escape route as well as a hiding spot, which reduces cornering and aggression compared with a dead-end hide.
  • Doubles as a spawning cave — suits cave-spawning cichlids and other species that breed in an enclosed tube.
  • One shelter per territorial fish — adding a hide each for territorial tankmates does more to reduce aggression than adding tank volume alone.

Large or medium — which do I need?
VINE20 – Large VINE19 – Medium
Diameter 8–12cm 6–7cm
Length 20–30cm 30–40cm
Best for Plecos, larger cichlids and other bigger cave-dwellers Smaller fish, shrimp and crayfish, or a longer, narrower tunnel

Go by the width of the fish you're housing, not just its length — a hide has to be wide enough for the fish to turn around comfortably inside, which is where the L's 8–12cm diameter earns its size over the M's narrower 6–7cm.

Suitable for, and not suitable for
  • Suitable for: plecos, larger cichlids, catfish and other mid-to-large cave-dwelling freshwater and marine fish; shrimp and crayfish will also use the space.
  • Not suitable for: very small fish or fry as their sole hiding option — a tube this size suits a larger occupant better than a nano species, which is better served by the smaller Hide Cave M.
Care and maintenance

Rinse before adding to the tank. As with any new hardscape or ornament, watch water clarity for the first day or two after adding it and be prepared to do a water change if needed.

Warranty and delivery

Covered against manufacturing defects on arrival, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Standard parcel delivery applies.

Common questions

What fish is this cave sized for?

Its 8–12cm diameter and 20–30cm length suit plecos, larger cichlids and other mid-to-large cave-dwelling fish that need room to turn around inside, not just fit lengthwise.

Will it work as a breeding cave?

Yes — the open-tube shape suits cave-spawning cichlids and other species that breed inside an enclosed tunnel.

Does it come in a smaller size?

Yes — the Bioscape Hide Cave M (VINE19) is 6–7cm diameter by 30–40cm, for smaller fish and shrimp.

What is it made from?

Bioscape doesn't publish the exact material composition for this piece on their AU site — contact us if you need that confirmed before ordering.
