Bioscape Hang on BIS500 Motor
Bring a mid-size Bioscape hang-on filter back up to its full 550 L/h. This is the genuine replacement motor for the Bioscape Hang On Power Filter Medium (BIS500) — rated for aquariums 76–114 L, a common size for a well-stocked community tank. When flow drops off or the filter goes silent, the motor is almost always the part to check, and this is the direct fit for the Medium housing.
Key features
- Genuine fit for BIS500 — built specifically for the Medium Bioscape hang-on filter, not a generic part.
- Restores rated flow — brings the filter back to its full 550 L/h output.
- No new filter needed — replaces the worn motor inside the existing housing.
- Keeps turnover where it needs to be — a 76–114 L community tank relies on that flow rate for adequate filtration turnover; a weak motor lets bioload creep up unnoticed.
Which motor do I need?
Bioscape's hang-on filter range comes in four sizes, and each has its own motor. Check the model number printed on your filter body, or match it against the tank size it's rated for:
| Filter model | Flow rate | Tank size | Replacement motor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small (BIS499) | 350 L/h | 19–38 L | BIS524 |
| Medium (BIS500) | 550 L/h | 76–114 L | BIS525 — this product |
| Large (BIS501) | 750 L/h | 114–152 L | BIS528 |
| X Large (BIS502) | 1,000 L/h | 152–288 L | BIS526 |

Bioscape doesn't publish a separate wattage figure for the Medium motor, so it isn't listed here rather than guessing.
Not included
This is the motor unit only. Filter cartridges, bio media, the surface skimmer attachment and the filter housing itself are sold separately.
Care and maintenance
Rinse the impeller and impeller well in tank water whenever you service the filter — mineral scale and debris around the impeller are the most common reason flow drops off before a motor actually fails. If the impeller spins freely by hand but the motor won't drive it, or it hums without turning, the motor needs replacing.
Warranty and delivery
Covered against manufacturing defects on arrival, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships as a standard parcel item with the rest of your order.
Common questions
How do I confirm my filter is the Medium (BIS500)?
Check the model number on the filter body or box. If it's not visible, match it against the size: 550 L/h, rated for 76–114 L tanks.
Will this fit the Small or Large filter?
No. Each size in the range has its own motor — use the comparison table above to find the right part.
What's the sign the motor has failed rather than just needing a clean?
A motor that hums but doesn't turn the impeller, or produces no flow at all with a clean impeller fitted, has failed. Reduced flow with a dirty impeller usually just needs a rinse.
Is the impeller included with this motor?
Check the condition of your existing impeller before ordering — it's a separate wear part, and it's worth inspecting it for cracks or wear at the same time as fitting a new motor.
