Bioscape Hang On Canister Filter
A compact hang-on filter for nano and small tanks, sized to two flow rates. The Bioscape Hang On Canister Filter is a hang-on-back unit built around two media baskets under a sealed lid, giving it more capacity than a basic hang-on power filter without the plumbing of a full canister. It comes in a 300 L/H model for aquariums up to 40L and a 500 L/H model for aquariums up to 60L, and runs on standard 220-240V household power. It ships as an empty housing – you choose and fit your own filter media.
Key features
- Two enclosed media baskets – more room for layered mechanical, chemical and biological media than an open hang-on tray.
- Surface skimmer – pulls water from the surface film to clear the oily layer that blocks gas exchange.
- Multi-angle adjustable outlet – aim the return flow to break up dead spots without repositioning the whole unit.
- Quiet running – 7W (300 L/H) or 9W (500 L/H) motor, low enough draw to run continuously.
- Fresh or saltwater – the housing and impeller are safe in both.

What's included / Not included
- Included: filter housing, 2 media baskets, 2 black coarse foam pre-filter inserts, surface skimmer attachment, multi-angle outlet.
- Not included: activated carbon, filter wool or pads, biological media such as ceramic noodles. The baskets are supplied empty aside from the coarse foam – you'll need to add your own chemical and biological media before running the tank on it.
Performance
Bioscape publishes the unobstructed rated flow only – 300 L/H or 500 L/H measured with the baskets empty. Once foam and any additional media are packed into both baskets, actual output will run below that figure, as with any hang-on filter; Bioscape doesn't publish a loaded-flow figure, so treat the rated number as a ceiling rather than a running average.
Turnover works out as follows across the rated tank range, using the manufacturer's own flow and volume figures:
| Model | Tank size | Turnover |
|---|---|---|
| 300 L/H | 19L (bottom of range) | ≈15.8× per hour |
| 300 L/H | 40L (top of range) | ≈7.5× per hour |
| 500 L/H | 60L (top of range) | ≈8.3× per hour |
Suitable for, and not suitable for
- Suitable for: nano and small community aquariums, quarantine and hospital tanks, shrimp and small planted tanks once media is fitted.
- Not suitable for: tanks above the stated maximum, or as the sole filtration on a heavily stocked or messy-eating setup – step up to a canister or sump filter instead.
Safety
Mains-powered – run it on a circuit protected by an RCD (safety switch), as with any submersible or wet-area aquarium equipment. Unplug before removing the lid or baskets for maintenance.
Care and maintenance
Rinse the foam insert in tank water (not tap water) during your regular water change so you don't kill off the bacteria colonising it. Replace or top up chemical media such as carbon on the schedule stated on that media's own packaging, since Bioscape doesn't set a fixed interval for this housing.
Goes well with
- Activated carbon or chemical filter pads sized to fit a standard hang-on media basket, for odour and discolouration control.
- Filter wool or fine pads for mechanical polishing ahead of the carbon stage.
- Ceramic or bio-ring media to seed the biological filtration this housing is built to hold.
Warranty and delivery
Covered by a 1 year manufacturer warranty against defects, in addition to your rights under Australian Consumer Law. Ships as a standard parcel item.
Common questions
Does it come with filter media?
No. It ships with the housing and a coarse foam pre-filter insert in each basket; you add your own carbon, wool and biological media.
Which size do I need?
The 300 L/H model suits tanks from 19L to 40L. The 500 L/H model is rated up to 60L. If your tank sits right at a boundary, the larger model gives more turnover headroom.
Is it safe for a saltwater tank?
Yes, the housing and impeller are rated for both fresh and saltwater use.
Will the flow rate match the rating once it's running?
Not exactly – the rated figure is measured with empty baskets. Once media is packed in, expect the actual flow to sit below the rating, as with any hang-on filter.
