Luohan Rock

A weathered, porous stone that builds cliffs and caves without hardening soft water. Bioscape Luohan Rock is sold as a 20 kg box of natural aquascaping stone – deeply pitted, grey to light-grey rock with the aged, weathered look of a rock face that's taken years to form. It sits in the same porous-stone family as dragon stone and Ohko stone, and shares their main advantage over a calcareous stone like seiryu: it's a workable hardscape rock for planted tanks and soft-water setups.

Key features
  • Sold as a 20 kg box – enough stone for a full aquascape or a large centrepiece structure, not a single piece.
  • Deeply pitted, weathered texture – craggy, porous faces that build convincing cliffs, caves and outcrops without extra shaping.
  • Low in soluble minerals – part of the porous "dragon stone" family, generally considered low-impact on KH, GH and pH, unlike calcareous stones such as seiryu.
  • Each piece is unique – size, shape and exact colouring vary within the box; the photo is representative, not the exact pieces you'll receive.

Bioscape doesn't publish a piece count or size range for the box – pieces are naturally variable, and the mix you receive depends on what's picked for that box. We're not printing a figure we can't confirm.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for planted freshwater aquariums, marine aquascapes, terrariums, paludariums, vivariums, and reptile or frog enclosures where a natural, weathered stone structure is wanted. Works well against light-coloured substrate such as fine white sand, which sets off the rock's grey tones. Less suited to a formal iwagumi layout wanting sharp, angular lines – Luohan Rock's soft, weathered contours suit a naturalistic look rather than a structured one.

Preparation

Rinse pieces thoroughly before adding them to a tank or enclosure to clear dust and debris from handling and transport. Thorough washing also helps minimise any effect on pH. As with any natural stone, it's worth bucket-testing a piece in a container of your tap or RO water for a few days and checking KH, GH and pH before and after if you're running a sensitive soft-water or Caridina shrimp setup – composition can vary slightly between batches, and we'd rather you check than assume.

Warranty and delivery

Covered against being not as described under Australian Consumer Law. As a natural product, the mix of pieces you receive will vary from the listing photo in exact shape, size and colouring – that's expected, not a fault. At 20 kg, this is a heavier parcel than most hardscape orders; freight is calculated on weight at checkout.

Common questions

Will this raise my water hardness?

Not by much. Luohan Rock is part of the porous stone family that includes dragon stone and Ohko stone, and is generally considered low in soluble minerals. It isn't guaranteed inert – like any natural rock, composition varies – so bucket-test a piece first if you're running a sensitive soft-water tank.

Is it safe for shrimp?

Yes – it's a common choice for Caridina and Neocaridina shrimp tanks precisely because it's less likely than a calcareous stone like seiryu to push hardness up.

Will I get the exact rocks shown in the photo?

No – this is a 20 kg box of natural stone, and the photo is representative of the rock type, not a guarantee of the specific pieces you'll receive.

Can I use it in a terrarium or reptile enclosure as well as an aquarium?

Yes – it's suited to freshwater and marine aquascapes as well as terrarium, paludarium and reptile or frog enclosure hardscaping.
