Exo Terra Moss Ball Treats 30 - 60ltrs

One moss ball keeps a 30–60 L aqua-terrarium looking clear for about two months. The Exo Terra Moss Ball is a resin-cored, moss-shaped media ball for the water section of aqua-terrariums and turtle tanks. It absorbs phosphate, nitrite and nitrate from the water column, so it works on what's actually clouding and souring the water rather than masking the smell. Drop it into the water section of a 30–60 L setup and replace it roughly every two months.

Key features
  • Absorbs phosphate, nitrite and nitrate — the resin core traps the compounds that cloud water and cause odour as waste breaks down.
  • Sized for 30–60 L — matches typical aqua-terrarium and turtle-tank water volumes.
  • Looks like a natural moss ball — sits in the water section without looking like equipment.
  • No plumbing or power — drop it in; no filter, pump or wiring involved.

Suitable for, and not suitable for

Suitable for the water section of freshwater aqua-terrariums and turtle tanks in the 30–60 L range, as a supplement to your existing water changes and filtration — it's an absorption media, not a substitute for either. Not suitable as the only water-quality control for heavily stocked or heavily fed tanks: a moss ball this size can't keep pace with waste that outstrips 60 L worth of absorption capacity, and it doesn't provide biological filtration the way a filter does.

Care and maintenance

Replace with a new Moss Ball roughly every two months for maximum effect. A tank running dirtier water, or sitting near the top of the 30–60 L range, will use up the resin's capacity faster — if clarity or odour starts creeping back before the two-month mark, replace it sooner rather than waiting it out.

Goes well with
  • Your aqua-terrarium or turtle tank filter
  • A water conditioner/dechlorinator for top-ups and water changes
  • A gravel or substrate cleaner for the water section

Common questions

Does it work in a fully aquatic fish tank, or only in an aqua-terrarium?

It's designed and rated for the water section of aqua-terrariums and turtle tanks in the 30–60 L range. Exo Terra doesn't rate it for larger, fully aquatic setups.

How do I know when to replace it early?

If the water starts clouding or smelling again before the two-month mark, replace it — bioload toward the top of the 30–60 L range uses up the resin faster than a lightly stocked tank at the bottom of that range.

Does it replace my filter?

No. It's an absorption media that supplements filtration and water changes — it doesn't provide mechanical or biological filtration on its own.

Will it harm my turtle or fish?

Exo Terra markets it specifically for use in aqua-terrariums and turtle tanks, so it's designed to be safe in water housing those animals. As with any new product, watch the tank for the first day after adding it.
