Fluval 304/305/404/405 Ceramic Impeller Shaft + Rubber Support (Straight Fan Type)
The shaft wears out long before the motor does.
This is the genuine Fluval ceramic impeller shaft and rubber support, part A20066, for the 305 (A211) and 405 (A216) canister filters – also supplied by Fluval parts stockists against the earlier 304 and 404 units, which share the same motor head. It supersedes the older part A20065. This shaft suits impellers with straight fan blades only – check the note below before ordering, as it does not suit the flat-fan impeller variant sold for the same filters.
Key features
- Genuine Fluval A20066 – ceramic shaft with the rubber support bushing that seats it in the motor head, sold as a pair.
- Ceramic outlasts the impeller's own bore – the impeller's plastic bushing wears against the shaft over time; ceramic resists that wear far longer than the shafts used on cheaper filters.
- Fixes humming and rattling – a worn or scored shaft is the most common cause of new noise from an otherwise healthy canister.
- No tools required – lifts out of the motor head with the old impeller.

Which shaft do I need?
Fluval sold two impeller styles across this range – straight fan and flat fan – and each uses a different shaft. This is the straight fan shaft. Look at the blades on your existing impeller before ordering: thin, straight paddle blades take A20066; wide, flat paddle blades need the flat-fan shaft instead. If you're not sure which you have, check against the impeller you're removing rather than the filter model alone.
What's included
- 1 x ceramic shaft
- 1 x rubber support bushing
Not included
- The impeller itself – the magnetic impeller with fan blades is a separate part.
- The impeller cover – sold separately.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for a filter that has started humming, rattling or lost flow after years of service, and for a rebuild alongside a new impeller. Not suitable for the 306/406/307/407 range, and not suitable for a flat-fan impeller.
Care and maintenance
Rinse the shaft and bushing at each service and check the shaft for a visible groove or flat spot where the impeller has worn against it – that wear is what causes the noise and eventual flow loss, and it doesn't reverse. Replace the shaft and impeller together if both show wear.
Goes well with
- Impeller assembly – check the fan type matches before ordering
Warranty and delivery
Supplied as a genuine Fluval replacement part. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply in full and nothing here limits them. Ships as a standard small parcel anywhere in Australia.
Common questions
How do I know if my shaft needs replacing?
A new hum or rattle from the motor head, or a drop in flow with no clog in the media, are the usual signs. Look for a visible worn groove on the ceramic shaft itself.
Is this the impeller?
No. This is the shaft and support bushing the impeller spins on. The impeller – the magnetic part with the fan blades – is a separate item.
Does this fit the Fluval 306?
No. The 306 and 406 use a longer shaft. This part is sized for the 304/305/404/405 motor head only.
Is this shaft for straight-fan or flat-fan impellers?
Check your existing impeller before ordering. This shaft is for straight fan blades. If your impeller has wide, flat paddle blades, you need the flat-fan shaft, not this one.
