Fluval 306/406 Intake Stem and Strainer
Protects the impeller from gravel and debris before it ever reaches the motor.
This is the genuine Fluval intake stem with strainer, part A20011, supplied as one complete piece – not just the strainer cap. Fluval lists it against six canister models spanning three generations: 305/405, 306/406 and 307/407. It sits at the tank end of the intake hose and is usually the first thing to show wear, since it's the part actually sitting in the substrate.
Key features
- Genuine Fluval A20011 – the full intake stem with strainer basket attached, not sold as separate pieces.
- Fits six filter models – 305, 405, 306, 406, 307 and 407 all share the same stem.
- Slotted strainer – keeps gravel, snails and driftwood chips out of the impeller well.
- Straightforward push-fit replacement – no gluing or cutting, it swaps onto the intake hose the same way the original came off.

Fluval does not list this part against the 304/404 or the 05 Series (105/205, 106/206, 107/207) – those use a different intake fitting. Check your filter's model code, printed on the rating label on the motor head, before ordering.
What's included
- 1 x intake stem with strainer, complete
Not included
- Intake hose. Sold separately by length.
- Rubber hose adapter. See the 305–407 rubber hose adapter, 2 pack if the hose joint itself is also due for a service.
Suitable for, and not suitable for
Suitable for a strainer that's gone brittle, cracked or discoloured with age, or an intake that's started pulling in gravel, snails or plant debris.
Not suitable for the 304/404 or the 05 Series (105/205, 106/206, 107/207), which use a different intake stem.
Care and maintenance
Rinse the strainer at each service and check the slots are clear – a partly blocked strainer starves the pump the same way a clogged media basket does. Inspect the plastic for yellowing or a chalky texture; a stem that's spent years under aquarium lighting will eventually go brittle and crack at the hose connection.
Goes well with
- Rubber hose adapter, 2 pack – the seal at the other end of the same hose run
- 305–407 motor head gasket – worth checking during the same service
Warranty and delivery
Supplied as a genuine Fluval replacement part. Your rights under the Australian Consumer Law apply in full and nothing here limits them. No separate manufacturer warranty term is quoted on moulded service parts. Ships as a standard small parcel anywhere in Australia.
Common questions
Does A20011 fit the Fluval 307 and 407 as well as the 306 and 406?
Yes. Fluval lists the same part against 305/405, 306/406 and 307/407.
Will it fit my Fluval 104 or 204?
No. The 04 and 05 Series use a different intake stem. Check the model code on your filter's rating label.
My filter is pulling in gravel – will this fix it?
Usually, yes. A cracked or missing strainer is the most common reason gravel or snails end up in the impeller well.
Does it include the intake hose?
No. This is the stem and strainer only. Hose is sold separately by length.
Can I use the strainer on its own without the stem?
A20011 is supplied as one complete piece, stem and strainer together – it isn't split into separately orderable parts.
